Exclusive: Pentagon races to track U.S. rare earths output amid China trade dispute

(Reuters) - The Pentagon is rapidly assessing the United States' rare earths capability in a race to secure stable supply of the specialized material amid the country's trade conflict with China, which controls the rare earths industry, according to a government document seen by Reuters.

The push comes weeks after China threatened to curb exports to the United States of rare earths, a group of 17 minerals used to build fighter jets, tanks and a range of consumer electronics.

The Pentagon wants miners to describe plans to develop U.S. rare earths mines and processing facilities, and asked manufacturers to detail their needs for the minerals, according to the document, which is dated June 27.

Looks like China found what it thought was a smart economic deal. Undercut everybody else with pittance labor run and pollution ignoring mining, while the world found more and more uses for rare earth. Ka-ching, while market cornered.

If it weren’t for other Chinese arrogance, we’d be in a mell of a hess here.

But China, while still not caring about its own domestic pollution, got socialism happy and went after hugely expensive schemes. Hey let’s give everyone a social rating, just like Marx would have wanted (dab a socialist tear here). You think credit bureaus have a daunting job. Now try orders of magnitude more data for orders of magnitude more people.

Now Donald Trump comes whistling down the street and says hey China, we are hitting you with a 10% tariff. China’s politburo gets together and says THIS IS BIG TROUBLE FOR OUR SOCIALIST DREAMS, AND IF AMERICA SEES THAT IT WILL SURVIVE, IT WILL GET WORSE! And Vladimir Putin quietly snickers... his dreams and China’s dreams are rivals.

I wonder about that “other” in this chart. Is Russia a part of this? Shopping for rare earths from Russia means pitting the “frenemies” of China and Russia against each other.

Well here’s an article linking special intense long-range military sonar to bleeding ears in beached whales, and it’s not from China. It’s from the US Navy, during the Bush era.

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2002/01/navy-admits-sonar-killed-whales

This doesn’t look like the usual sonar, though, and apparently was not intended either (an accident).

If China starts to hem and haw about the environment, that’s the perfect time to suggest that US technology in environmental protection is generally quite good, and how about China buy some of this technology. Then the Yangtze will no longer be an open toxic waste sewer, and Beijing will no longer suffer from smog.

Bogus news.

China cut its exports of rare earths to nearly zero a long time ago. They did it claiming “ecology” reasons but their real purpose was to hoard the product for their own micro electronic industry. This allowed China to undercut everyone else’s production costs (along with their near slave labor and stolen tech).

So, we and everyone else have been working on rare earth sources other than China for years already.

The msm lies.

about everything.

All the time.

OK... they are the low price champs.

It’s nice if it’s true, as mentioned in the article, that California could pick up the slack if needed. Maybe rare earths could be the issue by which the California left-itis might actually be beaten back.

And I was accused of being some “globalist” by merely wanting wise policy towards the world in favor of isolationism. We will gladly patronize countries where we are doing good by doing so. We will stop patronizing countries where we are abetting ill.

To elbow arrogant socialist China aside and to bring California back to reality sounds like a really nice twofer. Go go go rare earths....

I hope this mineral wasn’t among the ones that Bill Clinton put off limits when he took a lot of land for a federal wildnerness designation as the Grand Escalante without any previous hearings. The first the citizens of Utah and Arizona heard of it was the photo op proclamation at the Grand Canyon.

There was some talk at the time that this was the payoff to Mocktar Riady, an INdonesian mining magnate, who had donated big time to the Clinto Campaign for no apparent reason.
