Sacramento County Says It’s Illegal to Work on Your Own Car in Your Own Garage
Overlawyered ^ | July 9, 2019 | Walter Olson

It’s common for communities to use zoning codes to exclude commercial and industrial uses from residential areas, but Sacramento County, California, seems extra-zealous about making sure that residents don’t try to operate auto repair businesses amid homes. While it concedes to residents the right to perform minor auto repairs on their own cars in their driveway or garage, it bans repairs or maintenance in any of the following circumstances...

That was a crude EGR add on. Didn’t work for $hit. We used to install them for smog tests and then remove them until just before the next test.

Yep, in California at least. I agree, at the very least the car would have run like crap without the proper vacuum advance.

I had a funny thing happen, unrelated to ‘the law’. My, partially electronic, distributor died. So I replaced with it with an aftermarket. The car ran like crap for years with the new distributor, but I didn’t want to change the timing from spec due to annual emissions testing. Finally I moved to a county where that’s no longer required, so I advanced the timing a bunch and it ran great (by simply rotating the distributor...the usual way). I suspect that the aftermarket distributor simply didn’t advance the timing automatically, when needed...so now it’s always advanced, but the car runs much better!

Well, you could video the the ongoing activities AND the cops getting their palms greased, and turn the evidence over to an enterprising local reporter.

Two birds.

Those were unique with the valvetrain as you know. But for those curious, they have tappets like a flathead for the exhaust and overhead rockers for the intakes. So they have to be adjusted in two different places, on the side of the engine for the exhausts and on top of the head for the intakes. But what I found is that sometimes it is kind of hard to get the exhausts just right because of how the cam lobes are cut.

You know those transmissions are one of the easiest to rebuild there is. The trick is finding a dowel the right size to first hold all the needle bearings and gears in place, and then use the shaft to slowly push the dowel out the other end.

It was a breeze on mine, just have to make good note of how the gears and syncros are in there. Back then I bought the “small parts kit” from JC Whitney. But I am sure they are still available.

No thanks, people have had far worse outcomes than a $430 ticket when trying to take on authorities...particularly in Arkansas.

I agree, it would have pinged like crazy all the time. Luckily I was in a district where you only had to smog one time after buying it. Hose back on, done deal.

Throw in the aftermarket electronic distributor and the F134 does a lot better.

much of that population increase consists of people who do not share my culture, my language, my very Teutonic conception of orderliness, my sense of civic responsibility.

My neighborhood HOA instituted very strict limits on when garage sales could be held in response to neighbors operating flea markets out of their driveways 24/7/365.

Things aren't like they used to be.

I’m still using points. But the last few years I have had trouble setting them as easy. They changed the thickness of matchbook covers... Old joke... :)

Electronic ignition is well worth going to.The same with an electric fuel pump.

I would recommend getting a second module if you switch to electronic.

Absolutely, That is what I did with the Baja Bug. I bought two “igniters” that replace the points, one for back up. And I have points and condenser just in case. We get WAY out in the sticks and have to have spare parts to get us back.

“when it all comes down, if Trump can’t prevent it, there will also be no home schooling and probably no religious schools...”

Why would you think that? Of course there will always be home schooling and religious schools.

Tell you what, they are the most impressive 4 banger I have ever drove. I like to show it off by coming off the line in high gear. Chug, chug, chug... And the cooling fan sound is very unique on it’s own. Once you own one you can always tell when they use real jeep sound effects or fake sound effects in movies. Only the original 134 fan sounds like that.

I’m a system administrator by day. We have a 2000 GMC pickup, a 2001 Cherokee and a 2013 Escape. I do everything on the 2000 and 2001 (including rebuilding the engine, transmission, transfer case and axles) and have done regular maintenance (brakes, tires, oil changes) on the Escape. Now that the Escape is out of warranty, ill be doing more on it if needed.

I will say that the Escape is potentially difficult to fix, seemingly on purpose, but the Internet is a wonderful thing. Back in the early 00s, my other vehicles seemed difficult, but over time most things were collectively figured out by enthusiasts online.

With a lot of noise maybe?

Lemme guess. A few activists reacted in hysteria and bam. Sanity went out the window, not just that specific problem.
