Schumer is not trying to convince all 53 Senate Republicans to support his proposal. He just needs four. There are 47 Democrats in the Senate. If Schumer can persuade four GOP senators to join Democrats, they'll have a majority of 51 and can force the calling of new witnesses. Of course, Schumer is counting on Democrats voting as a bloc against the president, which is probably a good bet.
If Schumer gets what he wants, it seems hard to believe that will be the end of it. The request for more witnesses appears designed to lead not to closure but to reopening the case against Trump. In this way, if Democrats can introduce new testimony in the trial, they can say the new testimony has raised new questions that will require new investigation. bottom line is, Republicans should not believe for one minute that the campaign to remove the president will rely only on the case Democrats have built in the House. Schumer and other party leaders will scramble for new information to throw at the president, and at Republicans, until it is over. The GOP, and the White House, need to be ready.

You need to read the article. Schmukie only needs 4 GOP senators to join the rats in a call “for a full an open trial the American people deserve”. Meaning calling witnesses causing more investigation causing more witness causing ...., in other words a long protracted venue to inflict a thousand cuts n the President. Now we know the full plan.
They need 67 votes to convict. They need a lot more R’s. It isn’t going to happen!

I was a Romney supporter at one time, no more. Mitt’s in a very red state and I’ve read the voters in Utah are not very happy with him. I thinks he’ll stay the course but Collins is up for reelection and I think she’ll side with the Dems. Isn’t Burr retiring? If so, he’ll defect.

I think more likely Mikulski and Mitt than Collins. Of the three, Mikulski seems to be the most deranged.
A vote FOR ANY Democrat is a vote AGAINST AMERICA!
I doubt this will happen for 4 reasons.
1. Dem senators excluded from race
2. Witnesses wont go anywhere; could have been called by House already
3. Further unpopularity
4. Never-Trumpers like Collins get boosted in 2020 and Doug Jones losing stops the loas of GOP memebers.
I’m on the fence. The GOP can either:
1. Make the trial as short as possible. In doing so, they de-legitimize this nonsense. A short trial has a better chance of unanimous GOP support. Con: doesn’t give the democrats the bloody nose that they need...they will just repeat the process all over again.
2. Make the trial thorough. Send some of the major players to jail. Vindicate Trump. Eliminate Biden as a candidate. Take Warren and Sanders off the campaign circuit for a very long time. Cons: America is tired of this nonsense. Also could lose Romney and Collins in a long trial (the dividing America argument)

Curious that no one (particularly in the media) has a problem with Schumer planning a trial in the Senate before there has even been an impeachment in the House.
It is a given that the democrats will outmaneuver and outsmart the Republicans, with McConnel insisting that Republicans, only, play by the rules. Schumer’s wounded heart will bleed pure objectivity and fairness. It will be pitiful to behold.
Granting the democrats requests will be like opening a can of grasshoppers.
The trial should be shut down the first day.
I will never understand why the impeachment is decried by Republicans, correctly, as a travesty, but once it gets to the Senate, will be treated with all due deference like it came from on high.
They just need four Rs to join Ds to have a majority to call in any witnesses they want.
They will have “surprise” witnesses and more fake crimes if that happens.

Don’t think Schumer is trying to stall or scramble. I’ll guarantee you this was the plan from the beginning. Don’t think they haven’t already secured the 4 R’s they need to get this accomplished. They always play the long game, while the Rino’s are trying to win the quarter. I’m amazed at the people in here that are of the belief that the Dems are committing suicide. They have a plan, it’s been in place, and what we are seeing in the House is all part of it. Wake up people, the Deep State is much more powerful than you are giving them credit for
