C-RAM, which has been installed in the Green Zone, can blast mortar projectiles right out of the sky. Less of an issue than you’d think.

Yeah that’s cool - saw a better one shooting down incoming rockets - but like most defenses, they have limited ammo, and the enemy knowing that can overwhelm the best defense. A heavy mortar attack would guarantee a few rounds would land on your miniguns.
Well, “limited” ammo is relative. One advantage that the big LPWS part of C-RAM has over its seagoing sibling is that it isn’t limited to just the ammo on a relatively small mount - IIRC, it has thousands and thousands of rounds of ammo available to it.
It also is capable, as part of the C-RAM system as a whole, of directing counterbattery. It isn’t perfect, but there have been heavy mortar attacks on the Green Zone and other areas defended by C-RAM and they didn’t cause much damage.

Except Xenophon’s Ten Thousand was well-equipped to deal with just about any armed force they might encounter. 100 Marines are a drop in the bucket in the event the balloon goes up and they have to exit the country. I gotta ask - why haven’t they left country, given the apparent hostility of the Shiite-dominated Iraqi government to their presence?

We could probably return fire to the locations that the mortar fire came from faster then they could leave those locations, but I'm not sure about that though, but it won't surprise me if they could.

Regardless of what anyone thinks about Saddam or Qaddafi they at least kept a lid on things. Once they were gone the old rivalries surfaced. There is no end in sight.
