It depends. I know nothing of the kid, but I do believe he has a right to be heard. Picking this group to front for him was a mistake though.
If the hair is a violation of the dress code, perhaps they can explain how it got as long as it is without the dress code being enforced?
If he was allowed to attend the school up until now, how do you all of a sudden enforce the dress code. It seems they don’t even stick with the code. Now they’re blaming him for not sticking with it.
I will also point out, that what is acceptable in school, may not be acceptable in the work place. That hair may preclude him from being hired due to safety considerations.
If he was applying for an artistry position, he may be a good fit. If he’s applying for a business setting, it may not be a good fit.
I would grant him an interview, but I would not guarantee that he would pass it.
A lot would depend on his record, grades, accomplishments, abilities, and attitude.
His hair is none of their damn business. Did he meet the criteria for graduation? That’s all that matters.
May I make an humble suggestion?
The student in question should wear a dress (after all, it is a “Dress Code”) and when questioned about his long dreadlocks reply, “I self-identify as Rapunzel!”
If his hair was not in compliance with the dress code, graduation was not the time to address it - although I understand why they might have chosen that time to do so.
Why confront a situation when your opponent has time to defend himself - instead of waiting until you think they will have no other option but to comply. That is a chicken$h!t move on the school board’s part.
Its 2020 and we are still fighting over haircuts?
I am so tired of these spoiled kids who think rules shouldn't apply to them.
How dare they!!
