GOP senators reject punishing Romney for impeachment vote
The Hill ^ | 2/5/2020 | Jordan Carney

Republican senators quickly shot down talk of punishing Sen. Mitt Romney (Utah) after the party's 2012 presidential nominee voted to convict President Trump on the first article of impeachment, abuse of power.

Romney announced shortly before the votes on the House-passed articles that he would be the only GOP senator to move to convict Trump, saying the president was "guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust."

His decision sparked an immediate backlash from from top Trump allies, including Donald Trump Jr., who publicly called for Romney to “be expelled" from the Republican Party.

But that demand, or a formal punishment from within the caucus, was quickly ruled out by Romney's GOP colleagues.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) noted that he was "surprised and disappointed" by Romney's decision, but indicated that he would not face a formal punishment.

"I think Senator Romney has been largely supportive of most everything we've tried to accomplish," he told reporters shortly after the vote.

Asked how long Romney would be in the doghouse, McConnell laughed and added: "We don't have any doghouses here. The most important vote is the next vote."

Mitt Romney may have won the Iowa caucus and he’s moving on to New Hampshire to win the hearts and minds of his fellow Democrats.

Mitt probably has people like Tony Scaramucci or George Conway egging him on. They want Mitt to keep doing, keep saying things that Trump doesn’t want to hear.
All they need do is to keep flattering Mitt, saying he would make a better president. Isn’t it a tragedy that the only voice of reason in the GOP is being ignored?

Mitch said on Hannity tonight that they’re going to have some tough votes coming up and he needs his, Romney, support. Mitch also said Romney, for the most part has supported Trumps agenda. Sounds like Mitch knows what he is doing.

I can conclude that the Majority Leader agrees with Romney but can not express his true beliefs due to the fact that such a statement would be his political obituary.

If the facts aren't on your side, just make it up as you are going along. You have been completely wrong about how things are going to go every step of the way, then just turn on a dime. You will say you "always knew" one thing was going to occur, then when it doesn't and indeed the complete opposite occurs (like the vote on witnesses), you say you "always knew" that would happen as well.

I don’t see how they could punish him for a vote, if that was the case why have more than one Senator? That being said, he’s still a treacherous prick.

All the same people - what do they all have in common? That is the question.

Since then, Romney’s Utah approval number has tanked.

Updated: January 17, 2020
Washington • Sen. Mitt Romney’s approval among Republicans and independents appears to be slipping as he heads into the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, where the Utah Republican is breaking with the president and GOP leaders by calling for at least one witness, former National Security Adviser John Bolton, to testify.

Romney, though, appears to be gaining traction with Democrats who are giving him better marks.

A Morning Consult poll shows an 18 percent drop of Romney’s approval rating among Republicans in the last four months of 2019 as compared to the quarter before that. And 9% of independents swung to disapproving of Romney quarter over quarter, the poll found.

A majority of Utah Republicans still back Romney — 57% in the last four months of 2019 — but that’s down from 65% the prior quarter.

The Mutt’s approval number will now tank even further.

He should be free to vote how he sees fit to represent his State.

And yes, he can’t be trusted and should be kept off of committees. He will leak to the other side and god knows what else. Sabatoge.

"Larry Schweikart’s Twitter (a must follow) has a great explanation of the pragmatic reaction of Mitch. Spot on to the political realities"

Exactly.

The best way to neutralize Mitt (as well as Collins and Murkowski) is to win more Senate seats. Trump understands this, and so you'll see him campaigning for key Senate seats in KS, MI, AL, AZ, CO, ME...

THAT is not clear at all. The GOP Senate did a very good job on all of this.

I can’t stand Mitt, but it’s the voters that needs to get him out of power.

Take you head meds, perhaps double up on your dose.

Romney is on the Foreign Relations Committee, who Lindsey Graham says is going to now Investigate Joe and Hunter Biden.

Romney’s top advisor got one of those ridiculously high paying Ukraine/ Burisma Board Jobs!

And they want Romney to Investigate that. Yes, you read that right.

The rest of them would have voted with Romney if they weren’t running this year or in 2022.

I think people should start digging up stuff on Romney. I doubt he’s squeaky clean.

Well obviously he does. He shut the Dems down at every turn on this, and we have two new conservative justices on the Court that would not be there but for his strategy and political prowess. The Court would indeed be controlled by the far left at this very moment. He does know what he doing. The problem is that we don’t always like what he is doing in some cases, or what he must do given the caucus makeup he has to deal with. He is far from pure as the wind driven snow, but if he is on your side on a given issue, there is no better strategist you could have.

It will be a disaster, however, if the majority were to shrink and Romney’s vote is what would decide anything. As we can see, he is even worse than Collins or Murkowski. They are ultimately more reliable than he is. Holding our current seats and picking up Alabama and Michigan will be critical to make Romney less and less relevant...if Romney were currently the Senator from Massachusetts instead of Utah this would make more sense, but there is no excuse to have a RINO of this caliber from a state like Utah.

Mitt is lower than whale droppings at the bottom of the Marianas Trench.

But we don’t have such a big Senate majority that we can afford to lose even one seat.

Sometimes damage to reputation can be a harsher punishment than any formal penalty. I believe this will be Romney’s fate.

In fact, like Joe Namath, “I guarantee it.”

Don’t count on it. Utah will send him back with 70% of the vote..

By 2024 this won’t be on anyone’s radar there
