GOP senators reject punishing Romney for impeachment vote
The Hill ^ | 2/5/2020 | Jordan Carney

Republican senators quickly shot down talk of punishing Sen. Mitt Romney (Utah) after the party's 2012 presidential nominee voted to convict President Trump on the first article of impeachment, abuse of power.

Romney announced shortly before the votes on the House-passed articles that he would be the only GOP senator to move to convict Trump, saying the president was "guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust."

His decision sparked an immediate backlash from from top Trump allies, including Donald Trump Jr., who publicly called for Romney to “be expelled" from the Republican Party.

But that demand, or a formal punishment from within the caucus, was quickly ruled out by Romney's GOP colleagues.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) noted that he was "surprised and disappointed" by Romney's decision, but indicated that he would not face a formal punishment.

"I think Senator Romney has been largely supportive of most everything we've tried to accomplish," he told reporters shortly after the vote.

Asked how long Romney would be in the doghouse, McConnell laughed and added: "We don't have any doghouses here. The most important vote is the next vote."

Seems pretty clear Mitt speaks for nearly all the GOP Senate.

Bishop Romney is senator for life from Utah unless he resigns.

Uppermost in Romney’s mind was this, imo: His no-experience kid was feeding at the same Ukranian trough as Biden’s no-experience kid.

We have a GOP Senator voting to remove a GOP POTUS based on a partisan Stalinist show trial.

If that is not deserving of “formal punishment” from the party nothing is.

I can conclude that the Majority Leader agrees with Romney but can not express his true beliefs due to the fact that such a statement would be his political obituary.

Larry Schweikart’s Twitter (a must follow) has a great explanation of the pragmatic reaction of Mitch. Spot on to the political realities

Don Jr. was saying Mitt should be ‘expelled from the Party’.
I never knew anybody could be officially ‘expelled’ from any American political party.

Maybe he was just being angry and sarcastic. It’s not quite like certain religions, where you can indeed be excommunicated if you violate too many rules. Mitt would already know about that sort of thing, him being Mormon.

He won’t be able to walk in public without a good chance of getting payback for his betrayal. He could be a famous transgender now that I think about it.

A coward and a disgrace. A Bush Doctrine Republican. Say patriotic phrases to real Americans and behind these scenes shaft them to make yourself rich through the globalist network of corporate profiteers.

Mitt Romney made history today. Everyone realized what a scum of the earth he really is.

Heck, if you have support, it doesn't even matter if you are. Trump was never much a Republican historically, and now he's president. Sanders is the leader of the pack among the Democrats, and he is not a member of the Democrat Party.

Just when you think the Repubs redeem themselves then they take a step backwards. The party itself is compromised by treacherous characters like this mutt Romney. A purge is what it needs.

It’s all the same people. And Romney defended Mueller, repeatedly.

One of the leftist media places (AP I think) just said 64% of Utah residents think Romney should have gone after Trump as he did in the Senate. What idiots.

And many apparently are biased only because he's the first Mormon to run for top spots. That's like saying only one from a certain race or gender is right. Prejudice is the word for that.

Here it is : One section in an AP article:

Romney Impeachment Vote Heartens Some, Angers Others in Utah by Lindsay Whitehurst. 2/2/2020.... Many Utah voters share Romney’s wariness about Trump. A nationwide Associated Press survey of midterm voters in 2018 found that while two-thirds of church members voted Republican, just over half approved of Trump’s job performance. The VoteCast survey also found that 64% of Utah voters wanted to see the senator confront the president.
