The biggest city in the United States is now a search zone for anyone who had close contact with five people recently diagnosed with novel coronavirus.
At least 13 people across metro New York are infected with coronavirus as of Thursday morning, officials have said.
They include the city's first case of community spread -- meaning the source of infection is unknown. That patient, an attorney in his 50s, is hospitalized at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
The man has an underlying respiratory condition that made him more vulnerable to the virus, said Dr. Howard Zucker, commissioner of the New York State Department of Health. Cuomo said the man's condition was stable and improving. The attorney has connections across metro New York City. He works at the Lewis and Garbuz law firm in Manhattan, and his family lives in suburban Westchester County.
Officials are testing "a number" of people at the law firm, and none of the tests that have come back are positive, the governor said.
The man's 20-year-old son attends Yeshiva University in Manhattan, and his 14-year-old daughter attends SAR Academy and High School in the Bronx.
Now, the man's wife, son, daughter and a neighbor who drove him to the hospital are all infected with coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.
Only the attorney is hospitalized. His family members and his neighbor are isolated at home, Cuomo said.
SAR High School will be closed through Tuesday, the governor said. Yeshiva University officials said in a statement that classes are canceled through Tuesday.
Residence halls and dining facilities will stay open. "Students who have been quarantined or self-quarantined on campus will be receiving food and will be monitored by our health center along with guidance from city agencies," the university said.

Various health departments will contact those people and provide guidance.
"If anything, we are being over-cautious," Cuomo said.
Here’s the only problem with self-quarantining -— you are dependent on the DISCIPLINE and CIVIC MINDEDNESS of the person.
All we need is for some crazy, idiotic, individualistic person to break his quarantine AND be found later to be positive for Covid-19 and you will have mayhem ( this is exactly what happened in New Hampshire ).
SAR High School.
What a fitting name.
we are moving too slowly...just like Italy did at first
BREAKING: Italy reports 769 new cases of coronavirus and 41 new deaths, raising total to 3,858 cases and 148 dead
RE: SAR High School. What a fitting name.
The full name is Salanter Akiba Riverdale Academy (SAR)
Makes you wonder why Italy’s cases continue to rise dramatically while the rest western Europe has a slower spread.
Here’s the problem with Italy: people greet each other with very physical greetings and also they have a large number of elderly. No wonder the disease spread very quickly in that country and getting a lot of elderly seriously ill.

may have been seeded there was is slowly infecting the rest the EU..since they didn’t close the border or stop flights
New case in Las Vegas...with a travel history to Washington state..I think the NC case is also linked to Washington
You mean, like, maybe a devoted follower of ISLAM?
Or perhaps a Bernie BOT?
For Your Good Neighbor
Novel is there!!
“... said in a statement that classes are canceled through Tuesday ...”
Tuesday, 4 days away and within the incubation period. NOT.
“Heres the only problem with self-quarantining - you are dependent on the DISCIPLINE and CIVIC MINDEDNESS of the person.”
Another Freeper in Germany mentioned that the German cops had told everyone in a train car where someone had collapsed that they had to self-quarantine for 14 days. He said, “So, what happens when they take the hit for whatever money they would have earned in that time and then it happens again? Then, it happens again.” How many people can afford to take 14 or more days off without prior warning to their employer? What if they are hourly workers who don’t get paid for time off? What if they get fired?
Worst of all, only a tiny fraction of Americans have even $500 saved up. I will bet an equal percentage don’t have enough food and supplies to stay home for 14 days. Then, the stupid governor comes out and undercuts the order by saying he is being over cautious. That is simply telling people not to do it. Do people THINK before they speak?
2 cases in NJ now. Wait until one of them is a NYC daily commuter. 8 million people a day go into the city. Just wait. My sons NJ public school is already developing contingency plans to close over Easter as they anticipate the virus will be in “full bloom” in these parts by that time.
We’re not over this. Not by a long shot.
This will free up time for me to work on my bladder system!
7,000,000 people living on a tiny island governed by leftist lunatics, what could go wrong?
The most public case so far commuted from New Rochelle to Manhattan on the Metro-North’s New Haven line.
I caught that too, what a coincidence.
