What fumblethumbs at GM botched this PR opportunity?

No kidding. President Trump trashed GM today in the press conference which GM clearly earned. How dumb can their management be?

How much taxpayer money did GM take in a bailout? Now they balk at helping the country when asked.

Nope...we’ll need them in the second wave coming after quarantines are lifted and maybe even afterwards

I really don’t like this. Limiting the Defense Production Act to wartime situations was a bright line limitation on the possibility of it being abused. To use it for medical reasons opens the door to Dems using that Act for all sorts of things they may deem “necessary” to “combat” things such as global warming, etc..

They’ll do it anyway. Since when did they wait around for precedent.

It’s a fair question on the pricing, but the real issue was timing. GM in conjunction with it’s joint venture Ventec Life Systems, wanted a contract and were negotiating. They had to buy capital equipment, tooling, etc. to meet the production rate demand.

Trump grew impatient, wanted a deal without nailing down the details, so ordered the government to micromanage the effort.

“To use it for medical reasons opens the door ...”

I understand your point, but I think we have a way too narrow view of the concept of “national security”. We have spent trillions invading middle east countries in the name of “national security” - even though none of those countries has caused damage to Americans and our economy, here at home, the way this virus is causing. The virus is cratering our economy, and a lack of ventilators could cause many people to die gasping for air. If fighting for them, and for our economic stability, isn’t a matter of “national security,” then the word has no real meaning.

They may. But I’d rather not have those of us who would be opposing that kind of abuse surrendering on the principle this early. If everyone supports the principle now, and it gets abused by Dems down the road, who is really in a position to offer it them the opposition they deserve?

Just in time for the next pandemic, so that is a good thing.

FYI, most US hospitals provision for the absolute minimum amount of equipment they can get away with for ‘normal’ operations with some margin in the modern era. Gone are the days when a hospital had vast reserves of equipment in case of a Cold War going hot or (surprise) a pandemic showing up.

Then the same logic will apply when the Dems seize national production in the name of stopping carbon pollution "that threatens to destroy our planet", or to produce anything else our betters decide that we need more than the things we want.

I generally hate it when people cite things from Ayn Rand, but this how we get to Ma Chalmers soybeans.

We can’t even make face masks, good luck with ventilators.

And that is exactly what the left will claim the next time it is convenient for them to claim an emergency, and seize private production.

This was unnecessary. GM isn't going to product them any faster than they would have otherwise.

No. That’s a speculative danger. There’s no debating the reality of the biological - viral - enemy that’s besieging us, and our economy, now

So Trump is imagining that they were stalling?

Union-owned companies really care about the "Nation"... Trouble is, that "Nation" is any communist-controlled Nation...
