Media meltdown over Trump’s suicide warning shows the press can’t let its hatred go
New York Post ^ | March 27, 2020 | Post Editorial Board

...The New York Times ran multiple pieces that called Trump’s claims “baseless” — despite its own past coverage.

“Increase Seen in U.S. Suicide Rate Since Recession” the paper reported in November 2012, summarizing a study from the medical journal Lancet that found the suicide rate rose four times faster from 2008 to 2010 than in the eight years before the Great Recession. “The finding was not unexpected. Suicide rates often spike during economic downturns,” the story noted...An Associated Press fact-check called Trump’s claim “baseless” and insisted suicide rates might “diminish”: “The even higher suicide rate seen during the Great Depression of the 1930s fell sharply with the onset of World War II.” Non-sequitur much, AP?...

If you can possibly avoid it don’t walk under tall big city buildings, but if you must then walk on the curb or street.

I agree, but it is more than the health concern and fear of getting hassled for walking too close to people that causes added stress. There is also the fear of the government lying to us, and the government itself being the cause of the downtown. This didn’t exist in other downturns.

In the 2007 downtown, greed on the part of banks could be blamed. In the 70’s, the Arab states could be blamed. In the Great Depression, banks and speculators could be blamed.

(I am not saying the blame was appropriate, BTW; it was just commonly assumed certain entities were to blame.)

Now people have to wonder if the powers that be are exaggerating the threat for their own aims or if there was a deliberate bio attack they are not telling us about.

Some people simply look for an excuse to kill themselves. In 1910 some people committed suicide rather than be “gassed” by Haley’s Comet. Nothing happened.

In 1939, someone took poison rather than die at the hands of the Martians during hearing Orson Wells broadcast of “The War of the Worlds”.
