German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday announced the first steps in undoing the coronavirus lockdown in the coming weeks, with many shops allowed to open although schools must stay closed until May 4th.

Shops up to 800 square metres (8611sq ft) will be allowed to reopen once they have "plans to maintain hygiene", Merkel said, while schools will gradually reopen with priority given to pupils about to take exams.

Meanwhile, a ban on large public events will be upheld until August 31st to prevent possible mass transmissions of the virus.

Look for other countries to crack open parts of their economy. Germany is allowing a slew of small shops to open back up, getting some, but not all, students back in school, etc.

Probably the best thing to do is to start off with high schools and post secondary institutions and then the younger kids at some later point.

Hey, I’ve been listening to Herr DeWine and the ever lovely, ultra sincere Dr. Acton, and they tell me this is madness on the part of Germany!

Don’t they know this is a monster?! Even though it’s on the floor, it can still reach out and get you!!! (Yes, Herr DeWine actually said this.)

Don’t they know “scientists” say there will be spikes ahead? (The fair lady Acton said that in arguing for extended lockdown).

Germany has managed this crisis the best of all the Western countries, including the US.

Yeowzers! You should have warned me not to google that thing! At least Acton isn’t bad to look at.

Remains to be seen. I think the jury is still out on that one. To my mind there is one major difference to the way the US is handling this crisis. In Germany all parties seem to have realised that this is not the time for party politics. In the US on the other hand badmouthing the other side seems to be more important than beating the pandemic. Every politician seems to be mainly interested in finding somebody else to blame for the whole mess instead of working together across the party lines. And President Trump seems to be one of the worst offenders, I´m sorry to say. Whatever became of “The buck stops here” ?

On the surface, yes. But Frau Merkel is essentially a caretaker Chancellor, she will not lead her party into the next election, so there is no point in attacking her, she is on the way out. I expect that this crisis will deeply impact the next election. But I don’t think we can see how yet.

The biggest impact will be in Germany’s overt unwillingness to help Italy and Spain in any meaningful way. The primary cheerleader for Europe led the “every country for themselves” approach and this will be devastating for German credibility regarding Europe unity in the future.

Early testing was key. The Germans have tested twice as many per million as we have and had half the fatalities per million as us. They als have a more disciplined society.

In terms of managing the pandemic, it is far from being superficial. They have been the gold standard in the West.

I agree with you that the every man for himself approach within the EU will have a major impact going forward. Open borders are a liability in a pandemic

It’s in their DNA. The Germans have a saying that order is half of the life. My daughter went four years to a German elementary school. They were checked and graded on how orderly they kept their school materials. Everything has its place. There are reasons why we have stereotypes.

Is it really bad? A messy person has little chance to succeed in life. Germany has its share of white trash although they are harder to spot but with little experience you’d learn to see and avoid them.
