The Swedish experiment looks like it’s paying off
The Spectator ^ | April 20, 2020 | Fredrik Erixon

As the world went into lockdown, Sweden opted for a different approach

Two weeks ago, I wrote about ‘The Swedish experiment’ in The Spectator. As the world went into lockdown, Sweden opted for a different approach to tackling coronavirus: cities, schools and restaurants have remained open. This was judged by critics to be utterly foolish: it would allow the virus to spread much faster than elsewhere, we were told, leading to tens of thousands of deaths. Hospitals would become like warzones. As Sweden was two weeks behind the UK on the epidemic curve, most British experts said we’d pay the price for our approach when we were at the peak. Come back in two weeks, I was told. Let’s see what you’re saying then. So here I am.

I’m happy to say that those fears haven’t materialized. But the pressure on Sweden to change tack hasn’t gone away. We haven’t U-turned. We’re careful, staying inside a lot more. But schools and stores remain open. Unlike some countries on the continent, no one is asking for ‘our papers’ when we move around in cities. The police don’t stop us and ask why we are spending so much time outdoors: authorities rather encourage it. No one is prying in shopping baskets to make sure you only buy essentials.

I would strongly suggest you go jump over a very high cliff with plenty of rocks beneath it.
It's not Sweden you should be worried about. They never shut down their economy. It's NYC that economy is humming along nicely thank you very much.

A comparison between Sweden (open) and a locked-down US state of similar population (Tuesday’s Cov-19 data)

Sweden
Population: 10.2 million
confirmed cases 15,322
deaths 1,765
deaths per 1M pop 175

Virginia
Population: 8.6 million
confirmed cases 9,630
deaths 324
deaths per 1M pop 39

considerably more people are dying in Sweden even when normalized by population

They don’t have the highest death rates.

Are you lying on purpose or just uninformed?

I have read that the Somali population in sweden is catching it at 10× the rate of the swedish swedes. Not sure how that translates into the death figures though. Somalis only make up 0.5% of the population (according to the source I read) but account for 5% of infected. If their morbidity is higher that could skew the numbers.

“deaths per million are higher in Sweden than U.S.”

Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Spain, France, Italy.

All higher dpm than Sweden.

What say you, vatman?

Sweden
Population: 10.2 million
confirmed cases 15,322
deaths 1,765
deaths per 1M pop 175

New York State
Population: 20 million
confirmed cases 256,555
deaths 19,693
deaths per 1M pop 1,004

And they have no lockdowns in Sweden
Who is better off here?

The countries you listed have large densely urban population centers. Plenty of fuel for the virus.

Add Belgium which has a dpm of a staggering 518 as compared to only 175 for Sweden.

Im not for a perpetual and universal lock-down. There is no reason we cannot open up rural areas now, and bring back urban centers carefully. I am dismayed at three things: 1) the lack of progress in getting needed medical supplies, vaccines, test kits, and medicines for the crises areas, 2) those that advocate the National Socialist solution of survival of the fittest, and 3) the Hannity mindset morons who seem to forget this virus is from a Chinese weapons lab and is highly contagious.

New York City is not comparable to Stockholm. That’s why I picked Virginia instead of NY.

Right, and it’s really not the deaths per million at a given time that matters anyway. What matters is the total deaths over the span of the epidemic, which depends mainly on whether the healthcare system gets overwhelmed. So far the Swedish healthcare system hasn’t been overwhelmed and it looks increasingly likely that it won’t be. If this holds, then Sweden chose the right strategy.

This is dead on (pardon the pun). Because Sweden chose to rip the bandaid off fast instead of prolonging the pain; it won't be proven right or wrong for a couple of years from now. That's when the number of deaths per million attributed to the C-19 virus will mean something. One would expect their numbers to be significantly higher right now with a fast decline in the coming months if they chose the best strategy.

Either way their economy will be in far better shape at the time and well into the future.

In other words, the lockdown was clearly a disastrous mistake. We chopped outnfootnoff for a hangnail.

Yep, it’s just a Flu Bro...

We spent enough to put a colony on Mars and all I got to show for it is a used face mask. Thanks Falsey.
