Not long after President Donald Trump said Wednesday he disagreed with Gov. Brian Kemp's decision to start reopening Georgia's economy on Friday, Kemp took to Twitter to defend his decision.
"Earlier today, I discussed Georgia's plan to reopen shuttered businesses for limited operations with [President Trump]," Kemp tweeted. "I appreciate his bold leadership and insight during these difficult times and the framework provided by the White House to safely move states forward. "Our next measured step is driven by data and guided by state public health officials. We will continue with this approach to protect the lives and livelihoods of all Georgians." Kemp issued an executive order Monday allowing gyms, fitness centers, bowling alleys, body art studios, barbers, cosmetologists, nail technicians and beauty schools to reopen Friday. Theaters, private social clubs and dine-in restaurants can reopen Monday with some restrictions.

body art studios, barbers, cosmetologists, nail technicians....really ? You are going to hang your hat on tattooist?
All the more egg on their faces when the world does not end in Georgia.
Well you can drop me off on Peachtree
I got to feel that Georgia sun
And the women there in Atlanta
They make you awfully glad you come
I said watchin’ them planes
I wish I was on one
I’m sittin’ here thinking ‘bout my crazy dream
If I could only be there tonight
I think this story is basically much ado about nothing. Trump likely has the right to say that he might not have done the opening on the scale that Kemp did, but that is about the limit of all of this. It will be interesting, of course, to see what happens with all of this in Georgia and if things go well without any problems (as they likely should), then likely Trump is not going to have a problem with saying he was incorrect in that initial assessment and that will be the end of that.
I agree with that.
If Trump is overly optimistic and encourages everyone to open right away, if it goes badly, it will bite him badly.
If some governors want to open, they can. And Trump can sound careful and cautious. If it goes well, that doesn’t hurt Trump. If it goes horribly wrong and millions die, Trump can say, “I wanted to be more cautious”.
Everyone gets what they want. I imagine GA is getting something out this by going first.
I am not predicting those things.
Merely pointing out that critics won’t be able to just toss the charges around willy-nilly anymore because we will have had a real-world trial.
To me it’s a bit like Mikey in the Life Cereal commercial.
“I’m not gonna try it, you try it.”
“YOU try it.”
“He likes it! Hey, Mikey!”
If this is not a disaster governors wanting to open in the first few days of May can plausibly argue that they are not too early.
I agree, and I also think he should have stopped immigration a lot sooner. You can't control an epidemic/pandemic if you continue to let people come across your borders to the north and south without knowing what diseases they're carrying. And in light of the fact that the virus testing was so sporadic in the beginning, and the results were untrustworthy, should have made it even more imperative to close the borders. I have no idea if they were even testing anyone they were processing.
Maybe we will find out. Fauci, Birx and the CDC can make the models report anything they want. The rest of the Left, particularly those who intend to bring down the country will cook the books and report whatever they want to discredit anyone trying to reopen.
I wonder if Trump is doing this so that he is not accused of being a dictator. There’s got to be something behind this situation because Kemp is not the only one opening his state but he’s the only one Trump has rebuked publicly.
Trump does nto do things without a reason and time and again, we’ve seen his do stuff that we look at and wonder *WTH???* and then a short time later we see what he was really up to.
I’m willing to give him time on this one.
He may be using this as a tactic to divert attention from something else that’s going on. While the media is slobbering all over this story, I’ll bet something else is up behind the scenes.
I will reserve judgment for the time being.
I’m hanging my hat on opening it all up. All of it. Get the government out of it.
How does he know that?
One might as well say that a Jew in a concentration camp decided they liked Hitler. It’s absurd on the face of it.
Well, I won’t be hanging out in Atlanta anytime soon.
I live in middle Georgia and last I looked we had only around 190 confirmed cases in my county(population 160,000), so I will be making a hair appointment right quick.
And, in about 2 wks, I will probably go to a restaurant.
It was a “rebuke” with a wink.
I saw this yesterday and in no way was it a rebuke!
Yes, trump said he disagreed with the governor but said the governor should do what he felt was right.
Look, the White House Corona task force spent lots of time preparing the 3 Phases to getting back to normal and Trump cant just say its okay to go against it. That would be saying his plan was baseless and everyone should do what they want.
Even Fauci was strangely muted on this.
The Press tried to bait him, and all he’d say was “if I were advising him I wouldn’t tell him to do it”.
Yeah I saw it too.
Trump tried to thread the needle. Said he disagreed with the decision but would not try and stop him.
I thought the resulting press pummeling of Kemp would cause him to fold, but does not appear that is happening.
By that I mean this was simply a cluster and applying assumptions as to infection/death rate to the general population simply were not true.
Most of Ga. probably should be able to reopen. It is the Atlanta area that is still very active and should likely require extended restrictions. Just locking down Atlanta, however, would not “sit well” with the Democrat political base and their constituents, and they would scream discrimination.
Go Georgia!
