Minneapolis City Council members announce intent to defund and dismantle the city's police department

Council President Lisa Bender told CNN that with the nine votes the city council members would have a veto-proof majority of the council's 13 members.

Sunday's pledge was an acknowledgment that the current system is not working, Bender said.

"(We need) to listen, especially to our black leaders, to our communities of color, for whom policing is not working and to really let the solutions lie in our community," she said.

Pressed for details on what the dismantling might look like, Bender told CNN she was looking to shift police funding toward community-based strategies and that the city council would discuss how to replace the current police department.

"The idea of having no police department is certainly not in the short term," she added.

Bender and other council members analyzed the nature of 911 calls by constituents, she said, and found most were for mental health services, health and EMT and fire services.

What will happen is violence will become the new political system and the drug gangs will take over much like Mexico.

If this is the decision then all officers in the city should immediately leave their posts.

Go home, you’re not wanted. And while you’re at it, take the National Guard, firefighters, and medics with you. I’m quite sure the city will go on in some fashion.

For a while.

Then people will demand order.

Out of chaos will come order.

Sharia will be the answer...

In the end, the rich will have private security and bodyguards. The rest of us fools? Good luck and

I must assume Minneapolis will be under Sharia law and will become a No-Go City run and policed by muzzies. Dearborn, MI times 4.

Minneapolis is inside of Hennepin County, Minnesota.

The county sheriff has obligations to the whole county.

What will happen, is Minneapolis will use the Sherrifs Office for law enforcement. They will attempt to get a free ride from the rest of the county for law enforcement.

Hopefully, the County board will not allow that, but they may not have a choice. Property taxes up over the whole county, all the law enforcement budget of Minneapolis being siphoned off into the favorite projects of the Minneapolis council.

Of course, that means the Minneapolis council will not longer control the police chief and police in Minneapolis.

It may be militia time, or lots of deputies.

No MPD LEO in their right mind, who is eligible for hire elsewhere, would hang around for this social re-engineering experiment.

Saw a recent op-ed promoting the benefits of telephone triage for dispatching social worker, counselor, health or whatever-somebody-thinks-needs-intervention. It would include a new number, like 727, to request the equivalent of social services on steroids. If you are homeless--social worker. Sick--health worker. If you are homeless, sick, and violent, well...

Per NYPD sources,

NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea has just been fired.

He called the Mayor and state government out many times over the terrible bail reform laws.

Disgusting.— Ryan Fournier (@RyanAFournier) June 7, 2020

Most of them live in safe neighborhoods, I’m sure. As always, liberal policies hurt poor blacks the most. However, once thugs realize they have no restraints, they will soon move out into other areas where the rich folk live.

If big cities continue down this road, they will resemble 3rd world countries where gangs and drug cartels are in charge. Welcome to Mogadishu, MN.

Why not have charter first responders? Just like charter schools there would be a separate group that provided police like services but without the institutional structure of the existing public police.

The charter police could have a catchy name, like the General Colin L Powell first responders, or the Minnesota Transitions community police, and they could be located where the charter schools of the same names were looted in Minneapolis.

The charter first responders wouldn't have to use unionized employees, and they could design their own programs while still receiving public funds. They would probably be popular with the local residents, just like the charter schools were before the protestors destroyed them.

Of course the Democratic politicians would support the new charter first responders, just like they support charter schools.

They have already gotten their people used to the idea that the cops will still be around..We aren’t going to get rid the police totally for the near future....

They understand anything goes wrong ,they get sued and Minneapolis goes into the crapper..I think this is a ploy to work around the edges and toss their leftists friends a bone....

> I read an article which said that if they did away with police in major cities, then the law enforcement presence would be the county sheriff or state troopers. <

I believe you are correct. The state has the ultimate responsibility here. I mentioned this elsewhere:

In my neck of the woods, a few towns have disbanded their police forces, for financial reasons. It then becomes the responsibility of the state police to police those towns.

And that’s just what the state police do. But while a local cop might answer your call in 10 minutes, it might take a trooper an hour to get there...assuming one is available.
