The Trump administration moved forward with plans to regulate content on social-media platforms Monday, formally asking federal regulators to start overseeing how these platforms treat user-generated content.
In a petition to the Federal Communications Commission, the Commerce Department called for an FCC rule-making to reinterpret key elements of Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act. That provision has given online companies broad immunity from legal liability for their users actions, and wide latitude to police content on their sites.
Unfortunately, large online platforms appear to engage in selective censorship that is harming our national discourse, the petition says. The FCC should determine how Section 230 can best serve its goals of promoting internet diversity and a free flow of ideas, as well as holding dominant platforms accountable for their editorial decisions, in new market conditions and technologies that have emerged since the 1990s.
The action follows complaints by President Donald Trump and others who say left-leaning Silicon Valley technology companies unfairly censor conservative views on their digital platforms. The internet industry has dismissed those claims, and is expected to resist attempts to reframe Section 230 as an intrusion on the free-speech rights of technology companies.
In a statement, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said the commission will carefully review the petition. But FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, said the panel shouldnt take this bait. While social media can be frustrating, turning this agency into the Presidents speech police is not the answer, Rosenworcel said in a statement. If we honor the Constitution, we will reject this petition immediately.

What she means is that the social media is frustrating to Democrats because the social media "speech police" have not completely shut down conservatives! That is where her frustration lies. It seems as though it is always OPPOSITE DAY in Libland! Everything they accuse the other side of ... they do it!
Best way is to force Social media companies to hire Americans
Why are filthy Indians operating from India in charge of most moderation on most social media platforms? Why is big tech in the United States absolutely dominated by foreign trash Indian H1Bs
Because they pay them cents on the dollar.
They can’t let the positive news of the HQC + Zinc get out. They pulled the YOU.TUBE segment of the interview with that doctor. They have pulled almost every video of the positive HQC documentation. If the public gets that info the shut downs will be over.
I don’t agree that the Feds should get into the censorship business. There already is an answer: remove the platform protections and re-classify FB, Twits, etc as publishers. This makes them subject to all laws related to slander, libel, etc. They would have to walk the center line politically or be sued out of business.
Perhaps Rosenworcel does not understand that if the leftist platforms honored the Constitution we would not need a petition.
Rosenworcel should consider retiring if he does not take the time to understand the issues.
Wow, so the long awaited turning point occurs. Great news for free voices everywhere in America.
And perhaps it’s no coincidence that this step was taken as Tik Tok is being taken from CHIna and the first Durham shot has been fired.
Free Speech ought to be infringed and managed by the government just like the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Infringe or don’t infringe. But be consistent.
This request is about 44 months late...
I can’t believe (well, in upside down world, I can) that Trump admin actually has to ASK FCC to reign in social media.....FCC should’ve done this, on their own, MONTHS ago.
Ajit Pai has been another HUGE disappointment.
