In life, we encounter things which may work in theory, but not in practice. Communism is famously one of those things. Time travel is another. With any luck, Americans will soon come to realize that strict social distancing, economic lockdowns, and mask-wearing all belong in that category of supposedly sound ideas that simply dont work in reality.
For evidence, lets look to Sweden. As Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, an ER doctor at a hospital in Stockholm, writes on his blog, COVID is over in Sweden. People have gone back to their normal lives and barely anyone is getting infected anymore.
Unlike so many other countries, Sweden never went into complete lockdown, Dr. Kendrick writes. Non-essential businesses remained open, people continued frequenting restaurants, the kids stayed in school, and very few people have bothered with face masks.
Basically, Sweden did the exact opposite of what most Americans tragically still believe are the necessary requirements to reach the outcome that Sweden has achieved.
He argues what should now be obvious to any rational, thinking person, which is that the size of the response in most of the world (not including Sweden) has been totally disproportionate to the threat.
Naysayers may point to Swedens mortality rate to discount its success. But the virus has taken nearly 6,000 people in a country of 10 million, and one which tallies about 100,000 annual deaths each year. Given that 70 percent of those who died with COVID were over the age of 80 and very unhealthy, he argues, quite a few of those 6,000 would have died this year anyway, making COVID a mere blip in terms of its effect on mortality. And, while Sweden will likely continue to see deaths from COVID, it will likely never see anything close to those numbers again.

No, communism is just as insane in theory as it is in practice. So is the idea that you can prevent the spread of a respiratory virus through a modern civilization by quarantining healthy people.
It is funny these people think we are Sweden.
Take a look around. Does this look like Sweden. Do the people here look like Swedes?
The stupid is strong in this article.
In a way. China is closer to being the Back Forty where the civilized world hid its heavy industry because it was too noisy and dirty to be seen in public. Can these public-spirited folks (in Obama's lexicon) help it if China subsequently stole all of our trade secrets and built their own giant industrial base to compete with ours? No, that was completely unforeseeable. /s
Yup! We panicked this time and the Swedes did not.
From the get-go Trump’s been given and taken bad advice from people who don’t have his best interest at heart.
Maybe you have the jjitters.
Just curious what you think ‘looking like Sweden, or Swedes’ has to do with anything, regarding lock downs, infection and mortality rates, VL.
I agree. Pandemic was not and is not Trump’s finest hour. Definitely should have done as Sweden.
Our medical community gets an “A” for effort but an “F” for results. Our failure to properly understand the proper use of hydroxychloroquine + zinc + azythromycin while sitting on an unused national stockpile is shameful. This should have been over in April with NO lockdowns. Nobody had to die.
You are correct, and it’s a puzzlement.
The one word we would NEVER associate with Donald Trump is
“naive” But he fell for this, Jeff Sessons, etc.
I think Trump put WAY too much trust in Mike Pence to handle this. Pence not only consumed the Fauci Kool-Aid but he proceeded to totally lose control of the message, allowing the media time and space to create this massive panic.
Trump has clearly taken control of this away from him. If there were time I think he might even be replaced on the ticket.
Agreed. The lockdowns were not, and are not necessary. It’s all nothing but politics and theater.
I have a book owned by my late mother, published by Princeton Univ. Press in 1954, entitled The Appeals of Communism by Gabriel Almond et alia, based on debriefings of communist defectors at the time. It chronicles their experiences of disillusionment. Interviews compare reality to theory and prove that the reality of communism, just like the Democrat party today is about power. Only power matters.
Chapter four is "Perception of Goals and Theory". On page 101 is a quote, "I didn't worry through the thick books on Marx. I joined the party when it moved a widow's evicted furniture (sic) back into her house. I thought it was right. That's why I joined."
I do not follow why you think this is stupid.
Going to the beach is what gave them the virus?
You get it by being in contact with humans who have it. Are you saying this only happens at the beach?
Going back to work after being in contact with humans is stupid? You must be saying that they knew they were infected when they went back to work at the nursing home, is that right?
They are required to quarantine for 14 days if they went to Myrtle Beach. MB is notorious for Covid
It’s very fortunate that the nursing home had no responsibility to make sure the quarantine was observed.
They could be in trouble otherwise.
I heard they lied about it but losing 3 staffers for 14 days would have been very difficult. So who knows.
A local group held a drive-by prayer event past the facility with residents on the porch
These curves are superimposable over Wuhan, Bergamo, and New York, and suggest that interventions which ranged from severe to weak make little difference in the outcome of an introduction of SARS CoV 2 into any human population, and that the percent of susceptibles may be less than suspected.
After two weeks we should have ended everything and gone back to normal..except for seniors and senior living centers
