Japan’s two biggest automakers, Toyota and Nissan, will ask Britain to reimburse them for additional custom charges incurred if the UK government fails to reach a Brexit trade deal with the European Union, the Nikkei financial daily reported on Monday.

The companies - Toyota Motor Corp and Nissan Motor Co Ltd - want payments to cover the additional 10% tax on automobile imports from Britain that the EU would impose should Britain crash out of the EU without an agreement, the Nikkei said, without citing sources.

the UK for decades was a good location for Japanese companies that wished to sell into the EU. the UK with its business friendly environment coupled with Common law and strong trade ties was the ideal location for the Japanese to set up their plants. Many are now shifting partly to other locations, reducing to just the UK market (which is large as well)

Those car companies appear to be acting as agents for the EU, trying to pressure the UK into a deal.

a deal which gives the car companies free access isn’t going to happen. It’s too late - there are only 3 months left and tons of matters to get through. Plus BoJo has the covid crisis to work through.

The EU tax on Nissan and Toyota can be reimbursed from the equivalent new tax charged by Britain on the import of Audis, BMWs, Mercs, VWs, Seats, Fiats, Renaults, Maseratis, Ferraris, and the rest.
Quid pro quo. Except as Britain imports approx three times more cars from the EU than it exports to them, it’s the Europhillies who are fretting.
