Blame NY’s soft-on-crime approach for horrific Midtown hate-crime attack
New York Post ^ | March 31, 2021 | Post Editorial Board

It turns out we have Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Parole Board to thank for that grotesque attack on a 65-year-old woman as she walked to church in Midtown Manhattan.

The Monday morning assault in front of 360 West 43rd St. definitely counts as a hate crime, as police sources say the attacker yelled “F–k you, you don’t belong here” as he punched and kicked his Asian-American victim.

But the folks blaming “white supremacy” are out of luck here; New York’s rush to empty its jails and prisons has a lot more to do with it.

Arrested for the attack Wednesday morning was Brandon Elliot, 38, who was out on parole. And the crime that put him in prison was stabbing his own mother to death in 2002.

Sentenced to 15 years to life, he was denied parole twice, in February 2017 and again in December 2018. But Gov. Cuomo has been steadily packing the Parole Board with softies who regularly spring even heinous cop-killers and terrorists, so eventually Elliot got freed, too, albeit on lifetime parole.

Not that the “reformers” seem to care what happens post-prison: He wound up in a city hotel-turned-homeless shelter. And it’s pretty clear that Mayor Bill de Blasio’s ThriveNYC didn’t get him any mental-health help: Neighbors report that he’s been a scary presence on the streets for a while now.

But the mayor’s wife said that citizens need to step in and stop a large man who just served 15 years for homicide from beating on a frail old lady.

Need to stop using people like Brandon Elliot for polticial purposes. Right now, He is the only person I blame. He spent 14 years of his life behind bars and didn’t learn a thing about being a decent human being.

About the only political thing I see in this situation is a call for quick capital punishment. He should have been hanged for murdering his mother 14 years ago.

He was in jail on a “life” sentence, so obviously someone else bears some responsibility for him being free on the streets to commit another crime.

I don’t forgive the parole boards who knowingly release violent, unreformed and unrepentant criminals back into society. Members of the parole board should be forced to live next to the halfway houses where the parolees are released to, then maybe they would think twice about their decisions.

Good point.

The minute righteous and honorable vigilantes bring genuine justice to the streets, they will get tossed into prison.
Can’t work.

People believe now they cannot get involved. That’s why they video with cell phones and go home rather than help someone save their life.

Parole boards should be held responsible for the crimes of the people they release. Being paroled should be a reward for the convict improving himself and developing prospects beyond prison. Most convicts shouldn’t get it...

Which is not done because liberal politicians will not allow it. There's more to blame here than just the perpetrator - he's been enabled by legions of liberals.

Personally, I don’t see that as a left / right thing. I think it is modern folks being too squeamish to take out their trash.

I might be mistaken but from the video I saw the doormen/security did nothing but watch as the elderly woman was beaten by a savage.

I agree, it should be something that is achievable as a “carrot” for those convicts who can still be reformed, but it should never be taken for granted as something that is basically guaranteed as long as you don’t murder someone IN the prison.

Local doormen did nothing. Wait that’s not exactly true. They locked the door with the poor lady lying on the sidewalk.

Correction to my above...I meant “didn’t get the MEMO”, not the MENU. I must’ve been hungry.

I got my info from the headline on the video but it could’ve been misleading for sure
