Black people represented the largest increase in traffic deaths last year than any other racial group, even as Americans drove less overall due to the pandemic, according to recently released data.
An estimated 38,680 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2020 — the largest projected number of deaths since 2007, according the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The number of Black people who died in such crashes was up 23 percent from 2019, the largest increase in traffic deaths among racial groups, according to the administration’s report.
Norman Garrick, a civil and environmental engineering professor at the University of Connecticut, said the numbers are saddening, but not surprising.
“Black people tend to be overrepresented as walkers in this country,” Garrick said. “This is not by choice. In many cases, Black folks cannot afford motor vehicles. And people that walk in this country tend to experience a much, much higher rate of traffic fatality. We’re talking eight to 10 times more. It’s a perfect storm of a lot of horrible forces.”
This most likely represents yet another way the health crisis has had an outsize effect on Black people. Even in the early days of the pandemic, the National Safety Council found that the emptier roads were proving to be more deadly, with a 14 percent jump in roadway deaths per miles driven in March. And Black people are more likely to face traffic injuries in general; from 2010-2019, Black pedestrians were 82 percent more likely to be hit by drivers, according to a 2021 report from Smart Growth America, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group focused on urban development.

Time for Biden cars
That’s because walking on sidewalks, and crossing in crosswalks is white supremacy.
“Could it be blacks are move likely to walk in streets?”
I drive a route where there are a lot of low-end, subsidized apartments on one side of the road and commercial businesses on the other side. I regularly see young people crossing the road anywhere, not crosswalks. They almost always are looking down at their phones and rely on driver’s to stop for them. I have always felt this is because school busses are treated specially and all traffic must stop for children. Not saying this is bad, but it trains children that whenever they cross the road the traffic looks out for them instead of the other way around. Then, they grow up and move into apartments on the opposite side of the road from shopping.
Another issue appears to be entitlement. I’m black, therefore people had better stop, give right-of-way, etc. Since these are not the rules of the road everyone else operates by, accidents happen.
I’d be interested in what traffic cops have to say about these observations.
Amazing stuff, as these people apparently are not smart enough to realize the cars vs pedestrian the cars always win, and dying by being hit by a giant steel hammer is not a good way to die.
Fatherlessness.
Like all black afflictions.
.....”I’m black, therefore people had better stop, give right-of-way, etc. (attitude)”....
Is exactly why they are avoided.... and I do.
I got a brand new car in December 2019, as of right now I have about
5800 miles on it, I just did not drive anywhere during the pandemic.

Want to have a little fun? Take it back to the dealer and tell
them you want to change the oil, rotate the tires, etc . That
you have a fun time in the car during the shut down and it has
been a good one. Over a 100,000 miles with no problems. Hope
the next 100,000 are the same.
Obviously, it’s the evil SUVs driven by white folk who’s to blame.
It can’t be their mama’s never taught them not to play in the street or cross only at the cross walks.
In Austin, people are constantly trying to skip across busy I-35. They rarely make it. But they try, try again.
Walking while listening to music that's too loud?
Driving without a seat belt?
All sorts of bad things happen to people who think the 'rules' don't apply to them. Which is a very common belief in democrat parts of the black community. (yes, it's also why their crime rate is higher than any other racial group in the United States) Char Adams needs to 'get real'... read traffic reports... find out the 'whys' rather than assuming racism...
Since the pedestrian deaths are unchanged during the period that saw a marked increase in black people dying in car accidents, we should maybe look at other factors. During the pandemic, cars sales soared and as a result everything including older vehicles are selling for more money.
Given that the biggest increases in accident factors were from people not wearing seat belts and from people being ejected from the car during the accident, maybe there were more first time drivers? Those two things, no seat belts and ejection from the car are the types of mistakes that new drivers tend to make. What if the whole conclusion this article is making is wrong and this increase is due to an overall increase in automotive mobility in the black community?
“Could it be blacks are move likely to walk in streets?”
...or high on drugs, alcohol or such; or unlicensed drivers or DUI? Just sayin....
Hmmm... Let’s see.
Could it be any of the following?
Do they tend to own older or less expensive/safe vehicles?
Are they less likely to wear seat belts?
Are they more likely to drive while high or drunk?
Are they more likely to speed or drive erratically?
Are they involved in more automobile accidents?
Nope, can’t look at anything like that.. it must be racism on the part of first responders and medical professionals.
Well...it is called “black top”...not white top!
Bad drivers?
On the way to work this morning I was in the right lane and some fool passed me on the right by jumping half his car up onto the sidewalk. As soon as he was past, his car was back fully in the street as he sped off at twice the speed of anyone else.
Drivers like this are what causes accidents.
There was zero discussion about where the alleged accidents occurred, nor the type of accident that lead to the statistic. Total generalization. My EEOC training taught me generalizing about people = bigotry.
Nah. They’ll all buy Escalades with their reparation money.
Not when wearing black covid masks.
Big blue cities, dense population, terrible drivers and jaywalking is a tough combo.
Well it’s obvious, if blacks are too dumb to get a voter ID then it’s probably a given they’re too dumb to drive( spoken tongue in cheek like a democrat).
Whitey wrote the traffic laws and sensible safety rules and "The Man" ain't gonna make me comply - that's racist!
