Judge Fines Cancer Patient, 72, for Overgrown Lawn: ‘I’d Give Jail Time if I Could’

A hardline judge has fined and ridiculed a 72-year-old Michigan man with lymphoma, ruling that he “should be ashamed” of being too weak to mow his overgrown lawn.

Burhan Chowdhury of Hamtramck, a community about six miles north of Detroit, admittedly fell behind in yard maintenance after he was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes in 2019. His overgrown property prompted local officials to subpoena Chowdhury.

In now-viral footage of the Zoom court hearing on Jan. 10, Chowdhury’s breathing appeared labored as Judge Alexis G. Krot of the 31st District Court berated him. “You should be ashamed of yourself,” says Krot, in a video shared Jan. 12 on social media, and viewed more than 37,500 times as of Thursday morning. “If I could give you jail time on this, I would.”

“...son was in Bangladesh...”

For years, Shibbir helped his struggling father around the house, but had been in Bangladesh for three months prior to Chowdhury’s citation on Aug 2.

The son was in Bangladesh the 3 months prior to the ticket. What was the son doing between Aug 2 and January10...the court date? That yard doesn’t just look overthrown...it looks abandoned. I feel for the.old guy, but there was a way to have the yard cut. Heck, I’ve helped neighbors in their yards. Even had three neighbors help me at two different times when a tree went down in my yard last week. One time in the rain!

The father of a local family died suddenly a day after he cut 10 acres of hay. Neighbors baled the hay and put it up so the family could deal with one less problem.

Out in Iowa a few years ago someone torched a combine and grain cart because the farmer flew a Trump flag on it.
Neighbors got together and harvested hundreds of acres of the man’s grain.

I can’t be the only one that agrees with the judge.

You are.

Let me guess.

HOA board member?

“A real neighbor would.”

You’d get sued, or the government would make you continue, or you’d be charged as an accessory, etc.

No good could come of it. Realize, you would be competing with the police, the bureaucrats, the judges, the lawn services, etc, etc. All of them baring their knives for you.

I did not intend to insult you-only to point out the difference between living on acreage and living on a city lot-city lot=no livestock, every lot the same, keep the grass cut, city ordinances, etc-country acreage = livestock, no ordinances, etc-we don’t have any of that type of rule out here-it would be ridiculous and unenforceable in any case...

The rules on vegetation here are different-in this county, there is no longer any planting of non-native species of grass, etc like St Augustine grass, etc because they use too much water and are not compatible with native vegetation-and you can’t plant caladiums, elephant ears, etc near the river, lake or any of the creeks-they can escape cultivation and harm fish and native vegetation-we have other environmental rules specifying the use of only organic, non chemical pesticides, herbicides, etc because of groundwater and livestock, etc-that is probably not found in cities, as well-many people will not live here because they don’t like all the environmental rules-and that is okay, too. But there are no grass-cutting or junk clearing rules-your property, your business-people can operate any business they want on their property, too-no zoning out here...

I was wondering why neighbors were not helpful to that ailing person living in that city-it is just incomprehensible to me-and if he had a stroke, I’m pretty sure his overriding concern was not his yard turning to s*** -I would think neighbors-and certainly a judge would know that he had more immediate issues-like being glad to be alive and wanting to recover and stay that way-some junk and an overgrown yard are an annoyance-not a crime or an act of war, in my opinion-and if you don’t like the rules in a city, don’t live in one-but that is just my dos centavos...

There are a number of pics of both towns, showing exactly what I said, but my Norton 360 finds a “Trojan Virus Warning” if I try to open the pics’ websites, on Duck Duck Go.

I remember the sights and smells back in 2011 when I and some business associates visited those towns, on our way to Ford HQ offices for meetings.

Article mentions a 33 yr old son... you’d think he could have mowed for his dad.

Suburbanites hate disorder and are afraid it will reflect negatively on their property values. The only places overgrown yards are tolerated are on rural properties or in the slums.

Chowdhury’s son, Shibbir, 33, was also present, and spoke on behalf of his father when he told Krot that cancer treatments had left his dad very weak — and prevented him from mowing the lawn lately

What a great son to not help out his sick father. Deport both of them!

I get angry too when nonresidents talk about how Dearborn is “a no-go zone” or decrepit. There are very nice and upscale areas of Dearborn, two world-class golf clubs, and the headquarters of one of the largest corporations in the world.
