—”Which kind of makes them somewhat less useful as naval artillery.”

The old cliche is the amateur’s talk strategy and the pros logistics.

Resupply is going to be a bitch.

Russia has always had a terrible Navy. Read about their expedition against Japan. What do you expect from a country without a warm water port.

In fairness, do we know it was sunk from Ukrainian missiles or just general incompetence? When they fought Japan, many ships were sunk before they even engaged Japan, including at least two or three that were sunk by being accidentally sunk by other of their ship's fire.

There only successful engagement was against some unarmed Scandinavian or British fishing boats.

That is an interesting observation. I had thought the ships were there to threaten an amphibious landing so as to tie down Ukrainian troops all along the coast. It appears they’ve been supplying the Russian war effort, which is possibly how the Moskva got close enough to be targeted.

Tough day for the sailors on that ship. War is hell.

In my day, Damage Control was King. Modern warships should be able to have a trained crew and a ship design which makes it possible to keep fighting even after quite a bit of damage from enemy action. I hope the Russians didn’t make the same mistakes we’ve (USN) made in cheap, cost cutting marine architecture and then putting a bunch of girls on warships (ruins espirit de corps)

I know that’s a pretty old ship but still, it must have been upgraded i during overhauls over the course of 40 odd years

The question is was the fire a missile strike or smoking rooskie sailors spilling high test wodka around?

There's nothing like a sailor dropping a cig butt to make the rest of the fleet scramble to get out of missile range.

Wasn’t the Moskva known to stand/patrol well outside from the rest of the fleet, presumably to be outside of the range of shore based missiles?

From another story...

“Russian Navy ships in the northern Black Sea moved south as the Moskva battled a severe fire, the US official said.”

Seems like if it were an accident they ships would be moving to support rather than running away.

Other reports indicate that the crew of the Moskva were removed by other Rooskie Navy ships?

Who really knows?

Right now, no one. But before long the families of missing/dead sailors will be getting and spreading the news of the extent of the loss. When the Kursk was lost, the Russians tried to cover it up for a while, but they can keep a lid on it for only so long.

Um... the Moskva wasn’t a great sector defense cruiser - it wasn’t designed to do so. It was a massively overpowered missile bus that once the missiles were gone it could do a decent job of protecting itself at close to medium range. It doesn’t have the AA missile launchers to cover a flotilla.

Dunno about that, but because of those massive box launchers installed on deck, Moskva was always horrifically vulnerable until it emptied them and that was by design. The launchers could not be heavily armored or the ship would be too top heavy. The original design brief for the ship was to fire them all at an enemy formation in a first strike or if approached by an existential threat, to fire them all before it could get there. Think ‘PT Boat, only with massive capital ship killing missiles instead of torpedoes’ and you have the idea of how vulnerable the thing was until it got all of the missiles away.

Wasn’t the Moskva also sort of an AWACS of the sea, with all sorts of electronics the other ships did not have and connected anti-aircraft missiles to use to protect the rest of the fleet?

There’s a disagreement on the cause of the fires that set
off the munitions explosions.

The headline isn’t exactly honest > IMO.
