Musk memo to Tesla staff: return to office or leave company

(Reuters) - Tesla Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk has asked employees to return to office or leave the company, according to a memo sent to staff that has been circulating on social media.

"Anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum (and I mean minimum) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla," the memo said.

Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of the memo. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. Musk could not be reached for comment.

In response to the memo that was tweeted from an unverified account, the billionaire, who has proposed to take Twitter Inc private in a $44 billion deal, said, "They should pretend to work somewhere else."

Musk would "review and approve" any cases where they could not meet the minimum, according to the memo.

Tesla joins a wave of companies mandating a return to office for employees. While some big employers have embraced voluntary work-from-home policies permanently, others including Alphabet Inc's Google are betting that it is best to push in-person interactions among colleagues.

He’s weeding out the slackers. Of which I’ll bet there are plenty.

"They should pretend to work somewhere else."

That is hilarious!

I agree with him, but his problem are all the other companies that are his competitors for employees. Most companies allow about 2 hours of work a week at best. The rest of the time is attending meetings and other busy work. He can mandate this, and all companies should, but his employees will simply move to other companies.

Folks I know work more hours, salary, and more effectively (casual interruptions by cowirkers more frequent than family members) working from home than going in.

Lose some, gain some. It should be performance based but it never really is once a company gets to a certain size as prideful power or uniformity takes control...and dilbert is hired.

Yea, when you have a skill set this approach won’t always work. Plenty of options at this time. Not to mention the number of companies that have half the staff overseas.

If they're slacking remotely, they'll slack in the office. The slacking just takes on a different form, imho.

Unless, of course, we go back to the 1930s office model where the supervisor is in a raised office overseeing rows of desks, letting the employees know their being watched every second.

I LOVE that he’s doing this. Believe me when I tell you, he is being a leader for other companies, who are seeing production plummet. They are afraid of being criticized for demanding a return to the office but EM is leading the way.

Watch; this will cause OTHER companies to step it up.

I'm an IT contractor who's been WFH since the fake flu hit.

Saving 2 hours a day and 75$ a week not commuting.

Dilbert is NOT the problem. Wally is a problem. Catbert is a problem. Consultants like Dogbert are problems. Most of all pointy-haired and pointy-headed management is the problem. Dilbert, Alice, Asok and even Tina do real work.

Musk has the right to decide where he wants his employees to work from, of course. They have the right to leave, of course, and I’d anticipate that many of them will. There are plenty of options for skilled engineers, and currently a lot of those options don’t require commuting to and from an office.

Perhaps private employers don't, but corporate woke America has bent the knee.

key word “currently”. WFO is coming back and people won’t be able to escape it by going elsewhere. It is a rare person that can produce and be self disciplined at home. The majority, by far, are not producing like they should. And, it makes total sense to me as, when I’m home, I do home things and when I’m at the office, I do office things. We’re trying to turn things on their head and it’s not working.

That’s your savings. What do your customers get out of it? Higher or lower productivity?
