Opinion: Surrender on climate change bakes catastrophe in the planet’s cake
The Seattle Times ^ | July 22, 2022 | By Jon Talton

Historians of the future will look back on 2022 as the year America gave up addressing human-caused climate change.

And given the United States’ critical role in international leadership, this will be remembered as the year the world gave up, too.

President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better agenda contained much of the Green New Deal, aiming for a 100% clean energy economy by 2050; making big investments in clean-energy technology, climate research and innovation; becoming the world’s leading exporter of clean-energy technology, and standing up to big polluters and greenhouse-gas emitters.

But even watered down, it couldn’t make it through Congress.

Republicans appear likely to win one or both chambers in the fall, and the GOP is stalwartly opposed even to believing climate change is real and human-caused, much less to addressing it. The most modest progress, such as investing in Amtrak, which moves more people with less emissions than most other modes, may be at risk.

And don’t forget that former President Donald Trump and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell packed a right-wing supermajority on the Supreme Court. This past month the court voted 6-3 to limit the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to curb power-plant emissions.

But reality doesn’t care what Republicans “believe.”

A few hundred years from now when we enter yet another cooling phase, historians will look back to now and laugh at the people who thought the Modern Warm Period was somehow different and eternal because they couldn't learn from history and all the prior warming and cooling periods.

When the crop yields go down and rain patterns get harder to predict and deaths by plague go up (like what always happens in cooling periods), people living in the next cooling period will wonder why too many otherwise free Americans today don't embrace life during the Modern Warm Period and be happy we're living in it.

“ALLEGED (man made) climate change!”. The day the climate stops changing will NOT be a good day.

Do you believe this rubbish that you are peddling? If not, why not say so, or at least add a barf alert?

Otherwise, you are just serving as a distributer of state propaganda.

I don’t follow this “global warming” on a day to day basis.

But I have heard, that we have cut emissions over 10% in the last decade or so, and even cut emissions during the term of the hated (by liberals) Trump.

It occurs to me that we are making progress in having a cleaner environment, and minimizing man’s impact on the environment. I know whatever we do is never going to be enough to make Greta Thunberg and Al Gore happy, but the point is, we have done things to reduce pollution.

I do question how much the US can do, when countries such as China and India continue to increase their emissions? And what about that vaunted Paris agreement, which liberals love so much? Biden put us back in that agreement, which was supposed to solve all these problems? Or not??

All baked in? Fait accompli? What’s done is done? Does that mean they’ll stop pestering us now? I don’t think so.

Finally, at least we can say there is ONE win.

The gnashing of libby global warming teeth. I am more worried about the Ukraine war and Europe freezing this winter as the Rus gas pipelines go to zero flow.. ...About Mad Vlad using some tactical nuclear weapons. I am more worried about supermarket prices.

I am more concerned about how an ultra jabbed American workforce is unable to report to work. Is your local county government still “working” from home?

I will never understand certain things.

One such issue, is, we have had ice ages in earth’s history. Ice ages ended due to some natural cycles of weather and climate, and NOT due to man’s activity. During the last ice age, Chicago was buried under a mile of ice. How did all that ice melt? We do know, that the ice melted due to natural cycles, not due to man and pollution caused by the industrial revolution.

Recently the heat wave in Europe has been blamed on global warming. 100 plus degree heat in Texas has also been blamed on global warming.

Sometimes we are told you can’t go by day to day weather, as evidence of global warming. But hot summer days are sometimes said to be evidence of global warming. I can’t keep up with it.

As your children’s grandchildren drive down AOC Boulevard there will still be gas stations and the power will still be generated in part by coal.
