Russians are angry Putin is spending billions on an unpopular war as they freeze back home

Russians are accusing Putin of ignoring domestic problems while focusing on the war in Ukraine. Some Russians are complaining about a lack of heating in their homes, The Daily Beast reported.

Forbes Ukraine estimated last week that Russia has spent around $82 billion in war.

People living in the remote regions of the country, where conditions are at their worst, have been complaining about a lack of heating in their homes and burst water pipes, The Beast reported, citing social media posts.

Remote regions including Tyumen and Yakutia are among the worst affected, reporting many victims of frost in the past week.

"They take young men—the only breadwinners—away and send them back in coffins. The guys freeze on the front, get sick, die while their families live in poverty," Valentina Melnikova, an activist with the Soldiers' Mothers Committee, told The Beast.

"It seems authorities have no interest left in human lives at this point," she added.

Nikolay Zolotov, a Russian blogger who lives in a republic in Siberia, told the Beast: "Dark times. Ukraine is surviving without heating and light and here in Khakasia our life is awfully hard."

"Bursting pipes is not the worst problem: people live on tiny salaries in a poorly maintained city, without cash to buy food, while our government spends billions on the special operation in Ukraine," he added.

Among other costs more than $9 billion to pay off the families of servicemen killed in combat.

Mobilized Russian soldiers being deployed with little training and poor equipment have prompted more Russians to publicly voice their criticisms.

Before the war, which started on February 24, Putin admitted that poverty was Russia's biggest challenge, calling it the country's "main enemy" in 2019.

"Our main goal is to improve the quality of life for our citizens," he said.

I can commiserate with them. It’s a stupid war. The US should have stayed out of it and not spent a dollar.

Whover comes after Putin will ditch his stupid war. This is 100% Putin’s war. No one needs this shyte-show except for the cancerous, vainglorious, megalomaniac, fake Tsar who will be dead or deposed by March 15th.

Beware the Ides of March Pooty-Poot! Yevgeny Prigozhin is after your job.

We are not talking Moscow and St Petersburg here. In remote parts of Russia there are many poor rural people. The cities there are also poor. Siberia is mentioned here.

For Russia, think the poorest parts of Appalachia in the USA, but worse.

Before the war, which started on February 24, Putin admitted that poverty was Russia's biggest challenge, calling it the country's "main enemy" in 2019.

"Our main goal is to improve the quality of life for our citizens," he said.

This rings true. But invading Ukraine was spending a huge amount of money that could be directed to improving the life of the average Russian. Putin thought it would be over very quickly and that he would not need a large occupation army (which is very expensive as well). It wasn't over quickly, and for now there is no need for a large occupation army. But it is a huge continuing drain on their economy. (It is also a huge drain on the economy of other countries).

Col. Douglas MacGregor: Yes, well what they're trying to do is ship more equipment to the Ukrainians. The problem is the Ukrainian casualties have been horrendous; particularly over the last few months. There was an article today in the Euro News and I'm told there was another one in the New York Times describing the very, very heavy casualties. Of course the Big Lie that is always accompanied the bad new is well the Russians have taken heavy casualties, too. Nonsense, the Russians have not. That's the difference; when you are killing your enemy at a 10 to 1 ratio; which is about where it is right now in Southern Ukraine, you're not hurting at all. And the Russians aren't running out of anything. The Ukrainians are running out of everything...ammunition, spare parts, fuel, you name it. The soldiers, most of the best troops are dead or wounded and the people they are shoving forward in the defensive positions are untrained reservists. They say, well we sent 10,000 more troops to England for three weeks, you can't train a man to do much of anything in three weeks or even five weeks. You need time and time is something the Ukrainians no longer have. So the whole thing is on the verge of collapse.

NATO weapons production is also “good weather”. A heavy artillery day in Afghanistan was 300 rounds and for that US production of roughly 80,000 155mm rounds a year was plenty. But Ukraine is reportedly firing 20 times as many per day and Russia seven times that. One of the few prescient pieces published by the establishment press was “The Return of Industrial Warfare” in June. That pointed out what is now apparent to all – NATO does not have the production to keep up with demand. Brian Berletic has been keeping track of the diminishing quantity and quality of weaponry sent from America. This can be best exemplified by the 60 year old HAWK air defence system just sent. 50 year old Gepards. “Upgraded” (20 years ago) T-55 tanks. No more 155mm guns, now 105mm guns. Even the tame media is worried – “Ukraine’s Appetite for Weapons Is Straining Western Stockpiles“, “U.S. and NATO Scramble to Arm Ukraine and Refill Their Own Arsenals.” There are plans to increase production but that’s years away.

One of Moscow’s aims is to demilitarize Ukraine; never in its wildest dreams could it have foreseen that it would demilitarize NATO too. Boasting “How can Russia possibly hope to win an arms race when the combined GDP of the West is $40 trillion…?” misses the point – guns fire shells, not engraved paper.

And more. The West loves to call itself the “international community” but even the establishment has to admit that most of the world does not agree. Look at the lineup of countries wanting to get into BRICS or the SCO. How enthusiastic will cold unemployed Europeans be when another couple of million Ukrainians arrive expecting to be put up in hotels? There are protests all the time all over Europe – how long can they be ignored? Is Europe really “heading to the Middle Ages“? How many people will die from cold? More and more countries are moving away from the US dollar – what happens when it’s just another national currency like dozens of others? What happens after the last elderly weapon is dug out of the last storage bin and shipped? Where is Plan B?
