How common are murder-suicides?
Though shocking, murder-suicides are far from rare: some 1,200 Americans die in such incidents each year, according to research by the nonprofit Violence Policy Center.
Although there is no agency comprehensively tracking the toll of murder-suicides in the U.S., what data there is indicates that they are on the rise.
According to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), 2022 saw the highest number of murder-suicides using firearms on record. Some 670 occurred last year, up from 594 in 2021 and 570 the year before. As of March 9, there have have been 134 murder-suicide incidents involving guns, the GVA reports, meaning 2023 is on course to top last year's total.
The vast majority of murder-suicides are perpetrated by men, often using guns, experts told Newsweek. More often than not, they involve an intimate partner. Of these cases, 95 percent of victims were women, the Violence Policy Center said in 2020. Among the incidents where women were killed by an intimate partner, 92 percent involved a gun.
Family mass killings involving several victims where the perpetrator has died by suicide have also risen in recent years, according to a database compiled by USA Today, the Associated Press and Northeastern University.
Only a few such mass killings ending in suicide have taken place each year since 2006, but last year saw the highest number—10—since 2011. Eleven occurred that year and there were also spikes in 2008 and 2009, when there were nine in each year.
So far this year, a handful of cases of murder-suicide have made headlines. A Utah man fatally shot his five children, his wife and mother-in-law before turning the gun on himself just days into the New Year.

Hong Kong suicides are through the roof. Coincides with vaxxes and lockdowns.
I hear about these things, and I wonder sometimes how many of them are consensual.
It sounds like a harsh thing to contemplate, but I have to believe there are some of those, where a spouse cannot go on due to illness and asks the spouse to put them out of their misery.
Ugh. What a terrible thing to dwell on. No matter how you slice it, it is still a murder-suicide by the law.
It breaks my heart to even think about two people doing that.
There was one three houses down from me a week ago. I was watching the morning and heard them mention my neighborhood. Then they mentioned my block and I was shocked. I walked out and saw the police cars and crime scene tape.
A culture that disrespects life.

Its a very wierd thing to have a normal household only to discover not far away a family is going to hell.
A couple of years ago I had just about decided to leave a neighborhood because the whole area felt off balance. I became convinced it was time to leave when a couple houses down there was gunfire. I remember being on the phone. Whoever was on the other end of the line could hear the gunfire. I shrugged it off as firecrackers. But then after I put the phone down —the police arrived and cordoned off the neighbor’s building.
I though to myself. (Well, that settles it. I’m gone.)

And just a few days ago...
There was a murder-suicide of an entire family on the street where I lived back in 1976 Farmington NM. It is something you just don’t forget.
This has been done by people I knew twice-both times in 2014, by two couples, shocked everyone around here-in both cases, one spouse was within days/hours of dying from a fatal illness, and wanting it all over, now while their spouse had seen them suffer for weeks and had no intention of living on without their partner. One couple used a gun, and the other OD’d, but both left messages to say that their deaths were planned and consented to by both participants. Horrible and sad, but not like a cold blooded act of the same...
If someone insists on killing themselves I guess that’s OK. But DO NOT take anyone else with you!
