DeSantis says he would welcome bill to abolish 'corrupt' IRS: 'We need something totally different'
Fox News ^ | 27 May 23 | Kyle Morris

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he would be "welcoming" of a measure from Congress to defund the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) if he's elected president next year.

The comments from DeSantis, who officially announced this week that he would seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, came during a conversation with radio host and Second Amendment advocate Dana Loesch on The Dana Show.

During the interview, DeSantis was asked whether he would sign a measure from Congress to abolish the IRS through funding means, as well as what he would replace the system with.

"Are you for a fair tax, a flat tax, where do you stand on that?" Loesch asked DeSantis.

"So, the answer's yes. I think the IRS is a corrupt organization and I think it's not a friend to the average citizen or taxpayer," DeSantis responded. "We need something totally different."

I've supported all of the single rate proposals, I think they would be a huge improvement over the current system and I would be welcoming to take this tax system, chunk it out the window and do something that's more favorable to the average folks."

DeSantis, who has repeatedly taken aim at the IRS for its unfair practices and crackdown on the middle class, said last August that an effort from the Biden administration to expand the IRS with 87,000 new agents was an indication of disrespect.

"Of all the things that have come out of Washington that have been outrageous, this has got to be pretty close to the top," DeSantis said at the time. "I think it was basically just the middle finger to the American public, that this is what they think of you."

Getting rid of the IRS might be the way to start…it has incredible powers of surveillance, control and extra-judicial proceedings..

Taxing is not the problem. It is the overspending that is the real problem.

Trump is not a conservative. He’s all about Trump and will do or say anything that will whip up his faithful…although I believe their number is getting smaller every day.

Do you pay 30% tax now?

I pay more than that now.

Trump is not a conservative

100%, and that's why he won.

When I examine DeSantis’s conservative track record I begin with and end with the knife 🔪 he plunged into Trump’s back.

So you support a primary system where candidates take turns instead of competing with ideas.

Thanks for revealing that.

That is the truth. The other truth is that it takes naiveté not to realize that the initial level of taxation is a starting point and if there is no accompanying fiscal restraint tax rates can only go up.

I would love to see the IRS eliminated. I do not believe DeSantis could accomplish that feat no matter how many promises emerge. The federal debt is the anchor around our necks with overspending making that anchor heavier and heavier. Trump cutting bureaucracy, moving federal agencies out of DC and eliminating as many agencies as possible while spinning control of those agencies’ matters back to the state, is the best chance of unwinding the bloated unaccountable DC agencies.

I like how Trump ran the country for four years. Would love to see it run that way again. But I’m analytical and honest enough to judge the Trump-aligned MAGA Inc. political action committee’s ad claiming “Ron DeSalesTax” wants to raise federal taxes is total BS. It’s a disservice to Trump, conservatives, and everybody who wants to dismantle the IRS.

You can be for or against a “fair tax act” and debate it on its own terms. Misleading people into believing that it is yet another tax on top of others is dishonest. It is EXACTLY what the dims do. If Trump criticized the ad and MAGA Inc. for this dishonest attack, Trump would regain a lot of credibility and cache. Otherwise, he participating in small ball, cheep political BS...which will push me farther and farther away if it continues.

Agreed but the tax code, if printed one-sided, on 8-1/2X11 20lb bond weighs more that an Olympian can lift.

There are too many special interest-benefits and congressional carve-outs in the code. I have an MBA and I have to hire a CPA to do my taxes.

A flat tax with zero deductions or credits is the most fair

...and Trump has not won since 2016.

As leader of the party he lost in:

2018
2020
2020 Special Election 1
2020 Special Election 2
2022
2022 Special Election

“ When the Republicans took the House and Senate in 1994, lots of promises were made. Rep Dick Armey (R-TX) suggested that the GOP would abolish the income tax, and perhaps even the IRS.
Nothing came of it. ”

It wasn’t the Republicans who took power, it was the slightly-right-of-center wing of the Uniparty that took office.

You don’t get it.

Of course we want all of that.
And we’ve been pushing for all of that.

Yes, I have also noticed that. I do not hate Trump or DeSantis like a lot here do. I can vote for one as easy as the other. I will not vote for Scott, Haley, Pence, nor the fatso from New Jersey.

Why are you foaming at the mouth and typing in all caps?

Just because you yell something does not make it true.

But it is funny how you Trump cultists need to lie and try to negate DeSantis’ conservative record in Congress and as Governor.

It is so important to you that you start to LIE.

Very sad.

If you go back and read the history of the tax code in the United States of america, you will see that it has been completely dominated by large businesses and Wealthy individuals. It’s not going to change anytime soon. Both Trump and DeSantis know this.

The real fix is to repeal the 17th Amendment and return a check and balance on the Senate. Till that occurs, the parties, the lobbyists, and those who have big money will dominate fedzilla.

It’s time for a Convention of States to repeal the 17th Amendment and eliminate the Senior Executive Service.

Our Founding Father’s were not stupid!

After a few years of fair tax you would be lucky not to pay even more.
Initial taxation rates would inevitably rise. Without fiscal restraint & fierce pruning of bureaucracy, changing to fair tax would just exchange one tax monster for another.
The IRS is a monster but I do not think it can be terminated in 1 step. As choice & responsibilities are returned to the States we have 50 labs to work out cost effective and efficient ways of governing while allowing personal freedom to flourish. The IRS should be cut to the bone at the same time as the Federal costs drop. First step would be to continue the move of all possible federal agencies to lower cost regions.
