Jewish billionaire Jay Bloom says he and his son Sean were offered two seats on the ill-fated Titan submersible but declined to join over safety concerns and scheduling issues.
The American real estate developer, who is based in Las Vegas, said Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman ended up taking their available seats.
Dawood and his son were among the five people who died instantly when the submersible imploded on a mission to explore the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic.
“Every time I see a picture of that Pakistani businessman and his 19-year-old son, I think how easily that could have been me and my 20-year-old son – but for the grace of God,” Bloom told Reuters.

It may be that the 5" thick carbon fiber tube was just fine by itself, although cyclic stresses from multiple dives would have eventually made it also fail, IMO. But there's probably no way to know after the likely explosion inside the capsule, leaving only shards and filaments of the original cylinder.
The little viewing window probably went plastic (bubbled inward & fractured), or simply sheared and it's edges, and flew inward (at hyper-sonic speed due to the pressure, whereupon all the oxygen in the "cabin" compressed, heated, and ignited in a split second).
The CEO seems to have been fatally myopic. He might have been reasonably convinced his diving tube would be just fine, but ignored the obvious in-your-face stresses and consequent degradation the window was being subjected to.

ACTUALLY, it made three sea voyages (fourth this year) with multiple dives on each voyage.
A lot of jet engines have titanium cases wrapped in carbon fiber for catastrophic containment. I’ve watched high speed footage of containment tests where a fan blade is blown out intentionally at full power and the out of balance load on the engine shaft destroys the bearings leading to blades and sometimes disks contacting the case. The case bulges and collapses continually as the eccentric rotation loses its considerable energy to friction with the case. The forces in play in a 98000lb thrust jet engine doesn’t approach the force continually stressing the material at the depth of the Titanic. If the Titanium wasn’t heat treated carefully or had a flaw in the crystalline structure of the material it would be magnified. Also the aerospace industry goes to great length to avoid having chlorine or chlorinated molecules come into contact with titanium. Titanium is a reactive metal { it burns like magnesium) and chlorine contact leads to the development of embrittled zones that promulgate cracking. That is usually a bad thing for the structure whether it’s a compressor blade or a submarine.

And this wasn’t the vessel’s first trip to the Titanic, earlier expeditions had been planned as far back as 2018, but technical and regulatory snags had prevented them from being carried out. It wasn’t until 2021, then again in 2022, that the Titan made the first of several dives to the most famous shipwreck in the world. While generally successful, those expeditions hadn’t been without their own problems. This fatal dive would’ve been the vessels 14th trip to the remains of the Titanic.
