Stop donating to your university: There's just no point. In fact, it's almost always counterproductive

If you ever thought of being a donor to your favorite college, or leaving an estate gift, I have one piece of advice: don't do it. This isn't out of a cold heart, or being ungenerous, but from practical concerns over university and college financial corruption.

The same thing applies to making political contributions: the money just goes into a swamp, and both must be starved (or drained). Donations, if any, must be highly structured, with donor controls and institutional reporting. In both cases, you have to think and act like a shareholder and owner.

Giving money to a university is like government taxation schemes: the money disappears in costs.  Economist Robert Topel at the University of Chicago wrote the "white paper" on why your money never goes to what you think it does: it gets eaten up with bureaucratic overhead (his academic colleagues do not generally like his report).

The problem is so bad, as Topel shows mathematically, that the ratio of tax to any benefit is now over 250:1.  In the case he analyzes, carbon taxation, which is among the Biden administration's "green energy" policy centerpieces, it takes over $250 of tax just to make $1 of carbon benefit, and even that is subject to a lot of imagination as to what the actual "benefit" is.

Back in the university setting, faculty and staff have grown exponentially to the point where, in some colleges, they outnumber the students.  In the meantime, something else is going on that drains your donor dollars: university senior administration feeding at the endowment, tuition, and donor trough, and living luxury lifestyles.

My university called me asking for a donation. I asked them when they ever helped me find a job. They stopped calling.

I never donated to the University of Florida. They are communist scum.

My spouse and her family were farm neighbors to two spinster women. As a kid my now spouse took piano lessons from one of them. My spouse’s family sort of looked after them occasionally as she was growing up. The sisters left $10 million to the local university. I about wet my pants when that happened. Insanity.

I’m giving $10 to Cornel West. His website is up finally. I’d be ok if he just pocketed the ten bucks. It’s the threat of him being taken serious that’s appealing to us freepers. To me it’s bang-for-the-buck. Heh heh.

I went to ESU and there is NO WAY that they’re getting a dime from me until they support Trump, or at least understand why he’s there. And they’ve NEVER gotten a dime since I graduated from there.

I think they’d be better off at a trade school.

Similar story - My university called me asking for a donation. I asked them if their endowment was over $250 MILLION, funny thing they stopped calling. I assume the answer was YES!

Good one! I will use it the next time they call me.

FWIW, when I was leaving a job I had in Japan for a better job, my boss asked me if I could help find a replacement.

Since he had treated me generally good, I spoke to the appropriate department head in the university and was given an excuse that made no sense. So I went over their head, called the placement center and explained the situation. I also explained that I had gotten next to no help in finding a job when I graduated and was appalled by the excuse because the job I was leaving was way better (x 100) than the sweatshop job the placement center helped me find before I got this one.

Long store short, the placement center guy asked me for a couple of days and two days later, the department head who'd given me the stupid excuse faxed over two resumes of qualified seniors, one of whom my boss hired to take my place.

We took Hubby’s alma mater out of the will about five years ago. University of Arizona. Too woke.

I attended a small, conservative, church-related college. It has since gone full left-wing woke, including replacing the mascot because it “might be offensive”. Haven’t contributed a penny. Just received a mailing for our 50th anniversary of graduation begging for endowment money and inviting me to our class alumni dinner. I threw it in the trash. I don’t even want to be associated with that collage anymore. They probably will call me, but I don’t answer calls I don’t recognize.

I guess I’m lucky: of the three colleges I went to, one is defunct, one doesn’t have endowments, and one is Penn State, that doesn’t need my money anyway.

RIT took plenty of my cash 30some years ago. Great education, but no reason to give them a penny now.

Good.

My brother in law a few years ago told them “I am going to sue you for my worthless degree that didn’t allow me to get hired in my profession.”
They shut up. Funny.

I told them I donated way too much when I attended. Even if the BSEE was economically logical, I won’t give them an extra penny. They charge students over 200 for parking decals and write tickets for stupid reasons. Even back when I went, it was a scam.

Be careful with your money and childrens’futures.
