U.S. Ban On Incandescent Light Bulbs Starts Next Week: Here’s What To Know (TOMORROW)
forbes ^

Posted on 07/31/2023 8:49:05 AM PDT by algore

The Biden Administration will implement a ban on incandescent light bulbs starting next week in favor of energy-efficient bulbs, following a yearslong bipartisan effort to phase out the bulbs after earlier regulations and standards were blocked by former President Donald Trump.

The Department of Energy approved new rules for light bulbs last year that will take effect on August 1, including a new minimum standard for light bulbs at 45 lumens—or brightness—per watt, an increase over the average 12 to 18 lumens per watt for incandescent bulbs.

Retailers will be prohibited from selling any bulbs—including incandescent bulbs—that don’t match the new standard, though households using any existing bulb that does not meet the standard will not be required to stop using them.

The decision was meant to conserve energy and “help consumers save on their energy bills,” as more energy-efficient bulbs—like LEDs—use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs, according to the department.

An effort to phase out less efficient bulbs was initiated by former President George W. Bush, whose Energy Independence and Security Act in 2007 called for household light bulbs to have “about 25% greater efficiency,” though it did not outright ban incandescent bulbs, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Former President Barack Obama added two new regulations to the act in 2017, which would have effectively phased out incandescent bulbs and other specialty bulbs, like candle-shaped bulbs used in chandeliers, by January 2020, according to the EPA.

The Department of Energy later blocked the regulations during Trump’s presidency in 2019, after Trump—who said energy-efficient bulbs Americans were “being forced to use” made him “look orange”

I started replacing with LEDs a few years ago. All going strong.

I've used ~100 year old incandescent bulbs that are still glowing as good as new. Granted, they haven't been cycled on/off continually during that time, but they have lasted years, which is a testament to their quality.

“Anyone’s LED bulb/bulbs blinking or flashing....”

My brand new expensive one started flashing the first day of use.

If you don’t use them they last forever.

OTOH, based on 2 hours a day with a 100 watt bulb you would have saved hundreds of dollars with an LED.

LED bulbs are hard on the eyes. They blink on and off, although you can’t detect it, but your brain does.

Those 48” twin tube pre-assembled LED fixtures are available for around $20. Mine work fine.

The Friggin’ U.S. Gov’t should be proud. This is a bigger historical event than when the Boston Indians from the Warren Tribe dumped the tea in the sea.

Post your bank routing and account numbers, please.

Oh, come on. That is the most idiotic suggestion made on FR this year.

However, I am willing to set up a "throwaway" e-mail account, PM that to you, and through that I can send you my e-mail associated with my PayPal account.

A lot easier however would be for you to simply check into those vids on You Tube.

Note that I actually AGREE that in most instances when using above average quality LED lights, LEDs are great for most purposes, and have very good lifetimes. However, the real issue is whether gov't should be able to ban incandescents and effectively force people to use LEDs. Do you agree with that? I do not.

Ah, yes, but those $20 pre-assembled LED fixtures (I have and use many) can’t compete output-wise with a pair of 40 watt (actual) LED tubes.

Uh, you’d better stay away from any TV or computer monitor then...

(Just kidding, to make a point.) :-)

Note that LED phospors vary. All have SOME persistence (obviously minimized for display screens of most types) & some LED’s / LED bulbs have visible glow well after you turn them off. I’m guessing one’s brain can’t detect the “on and off” of such in normal continuous operation.)

You can’t afford it, I take it.

So, go watch those vids and report back honestly.

As I remember YOU opened the discussion with me with failed LEDs.

The government shouldn’t have been able to ban smoking in PRIVATELY OWNED businesses. But they did, because stupid voters throughout the country didn’t think of the ramifications of this massive government overreach. For those who voted for this, did they ever think it would be better to simply not patronize these businesses than to give away their future rights on other issues?

It isn’t. But... notice how FEW people here are making that point.

There’s the problem. Most are so used to it that they would absolutely refuse to think of tar/feathering a bureaucrat or tossing their light bulbs in the bay...

Much less taking up arms after a “long train of abuses and usurpations”...

the initial cost of Edison bulbs is cheaper thsn the non-Edisonn bulbs.

the non-edison bulns are ‘suppose’ to save your utility bill.

I bought ‘a round of Edison bulbs’ , enough to fit the sockets of my few lights, twice.

that cost me 10 dollars. that is for at least one year.

One single non-edison bulb, at that time was 10 dollars. To fit all my needed sockets, I would need to spend 70 dollars for a ‘half round’.

All to save pennies on the light bill.

To boot, this is hurricane season, and i live in hurricane country. When a ‘good one’ blows through, no lights, no power, no kitchen, no a/c, no water.

And now Gramps Joe wants to outlaw gas electric generators!
Aleady getting rid of gas stoves will kill the Oriental food restaurant business, so i think he wants hurricane country to revert medieval!
all for his whim to become government dependent!!

FJB!! LGB!!

I’m still looking for the language in the constitution that granted the feddies this power to regulate. I can’t find it in the commerce clause. Must be in some commie ‘judge’s’ penumbra or emanation.
