USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker: Oct. 30, 2023 (USS George Washington being deployed)
USNI ^ | 10/30/23 | Sam LaGrone

The USS George Washington is now underway. No word on its destination. The fifth deployed carrier. We had two at sea two weeks ago. These are the approximate positions of the U.S. Navy’s deployed carrier strike groups and amphibious ready groups throughout the world as of Oct. 30, 2023, based on Navy and public data. In cases where a CSG or ARG is conducting disaggregated operations, the chart reflects the location of the capital ship.

Is that something like 40% of all carrier groups?

This site shows 6 carriers at sea, 3 in port and 2 in the shipyard for maintenance.

Interesting. Navy/USMC air together is roughly the size of the entire Russian Aid Force. US Army air is larger. The USAF alone easily dwarfs Russia. China not even close to Russia.

Underway is not the same as deployed. GW is currently conducting “Carrier Quals” for pilots based at NAS Oceana, as well as various other training, certs and quals.

Doris Miller is quite a story.

This is where Free Republic excels.

Only 3 are deployed outside their AOR. CVN 72 & 73 are doing carrier quals in their local op areas. RR is conducting scheduled port visits in WESTPAC.

If it were not for the US Navy, the world would look very different for Americans.

The typical process when coming out maintenance getting ready to be deployed. Are saying you expect it to go to sea, conduct drills and return to home port? I very seriously doubt that is going to happen but we will certainly see.

Why not ? The maintenance/repairs may have some issues show up and need to fix the “bugs” before being deployed to Ops.

Yes, that is what will happen. She has been underway and returned several times since completing overhaul/refueling. Even if there is a plan to deploy, it takes significant time, both inport and underway, to prepare. All CVNs currently deployed are on regular scheduled deployments. The Ford was already deployed and was extended due to the war in Israel/Gaza.

I read an article saying the Eisenhower took additional planned days in crossing the Atlantic to deal with the issues you speak of. I know very little of how carriers are rotated, deployed, maintained, etc. I thought it was odd when I noticed three weeks ago that we had only two carriers at sea. It gets my attention that five are now at sea.

Had the Vinson been going through the same process when it deployed two weeks ago? I know little of the process. I was just alarmed when I noticed that we had only two at sea and none near the Persian Gulf three weeks ago. What’s the schedule for the Washington to deploy? Can you track the battle group being assembled in coordination with the scheduled deployment? Where is the Vinson headed? Was it scheduled for a normal deployment in that part of the Pacific?

You are absolutely correct. I was thinking that carriers at sea are more difficult to find and attack if there was a sudden escalation.

The Vinson went through a full training cycle to prepare for her deployment. She spent about 6 weeks in port prior to departure and deployed on schedule. Publicly, the deployment is to the Indo-Pacific, which could be anywhere from the Western Pacific to the Red Sea. Unless world events require them elsewhere, it will probably be the North Arabian Sea/Persian Gulf area. The Ike will probably return to the Med and the Ford will return home. If the **** hits the fan (a real possibility), all bets are off.

The GW hasn’t started her pre-deployment training cycle, which takes about 6 months. They don’t currently have a scheduled deployment, at least not publicly. Force planners certainly have plans, and the crew likely knows to various levels of detail. She is scheduled to change home ports from Norfolk to Yokosuka next year. I suspect that is her next scheduled deployment.

I don’t keep track of what we have deployed where but it doesn’t surprise Me that pedojoe had little to nothing deployed until the last moment.

We used to have the Carrier Battle Groups already deployed around the World so we could be anywhere fairly quickly but the dipsticks nowadays don’t think that far in advance. It requires the use of a Brain and we know those are few and far between right now.

Is the GW the next deployable carrier? Is there another that could be deployed more quickly if absolutely necessary?

I would assume the Bush and the Nimitz are both in sustainment/surge ready status, since they recently returned from deployments. They could probably deploy quickly if needed. The Roosevelt is currently working up for deployment, probably some time around March 2024. The GW is at least a couple months behind the Roosevelt, and doesn’t even have an air wing assigned. The Reagan is forward deployed to Japan, and in an emergency could be pushed to the middle east. The USS America (LHA 6), also forward deployed in Japan, could probably deploy if needed, and can carry about 20 F-35B’s when configured as a “pocket carrier”.
