WASHINGTON—House lawmakers rushed to the exits just ahead of Thanksgiving, with a surge of announced retirements from members fed up with drama and partisanship on Capitol Hill.
A dozen lawmakers—six Democrats and six Republicans—have said in November that they don’t plan to continue serving in Congress, the most in any month since at least 2011, based on data compiled by news site Ballotpedia. Just Tuesday, Republican Rep. Bill Johnson of Ohio, 69 years old, announced he would leave office early next year to lead Youngstown State University.
The pickup in retirements comes as Republicans continue to fight a wrenching intraparty battle over government spending, with hard-liners successfully ousting Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) last month and putting the heat on his successor, Mike Johnson (R., La.). This tussle has spilled onto the House floor, paralyzing it for weeks at a time. Moreover, many lawmakers of both parties have grown weary of the antics of some colleagues, with name-calling and social-media smackdowns now commonplace.
“The last few years have been among the most difficult and frustrating times in my professional career with a chaotic House,” said Rep. Dan Kildee (D., Mich.), 65. The six-term lawmaker, who serves as the Democrats’ chief deputy whip, announced this month that he wouldn’t seek re-election. “It’s hard to erase that experience from one’s mind in making this decision.”

By this week, the list of House lawmakers who won’t be part of the next Congress had reached 36, based on a tally maintained by the House press gallery, which includes resignations and planned retirements as well as deaths. That is consistent with the average of about 35 per Congress since 1960, based on statistics maintained by the Brookings Institution, though more retirements could be announced before this Congress is over.

But I expect to see more, as more arrogant oligarchs find that holding legislative power just isn't as much fun as it used to be (or the prospect of having legislative power REMOVED from them becomes more of a reality).
Rotation in office is a key to Liberty! So I welcome the rotation.
2022 was a shakeout election, as the dust settled in the newly formed districts. And due to court decisions, districts are still being formed.

Frankly, that’s always been true. The goal is to cause them increasing problems, for example, they didn’t expect to lose one of their vaunted oligarchs (McCarthy) and Trump has caused people who otherwise wouldn’t have gotten nominated, nominated. They don’t always win, but they don’t always lose.
And the people are getting used to voting against the moderate pantywaists, which is good.
I wish they would get rid of Executive Orders unless a National Emergency, Congress should vote within 30-90 days on keeping the order in place or vacating it.

Yup. Murdoch’s boys and girls at the WSJ are mad that the Uniparty of Democrats and Republicans is being challenged by the new MAGA members of the House of Representatives.
‘Reaching across the aisle’ partisanship by the Uniparty is not what people want Congress to do.

They’re preparing to sacrifice the GOP House majority in order to hold POTUS45/47 in check.
As far as I’m concerned, lots of those Congressmen who stay can sit on it and ‘rotate’.
Here’s the problem: Even if by some miracle Trump is allowed to win, Deep State still controls Congress, the SCOTUS, and the bureaucracy.
We might have a prayer if we find MAGA candidates to run for every seat up for election in Congress.
If we don’t vote by mail.
If we don’t vote early.
We are rapidly approaching the time when the last fig leaf drops.
If Deep State is still in control when that happens, God help us all.
Yes, this is actually great news in my opinion. The only thing that would improve the turnover is term limits. Probably half these guys have already lined up some kind of sweetheart deal with universities, big business, or media as a direct result of their lobbying tax dollars directed to those entities. (I’m not saying they are all crooks, just most of them....)
Don’t secede your power, the people can defeat the swamp denizens, we just have to work harder, there’s more of us than them.

Some may be leaving because of the intransigence between the parties, but I believe some of the long serving members are getting out to protect the money they have skimmed over their long terms. Their hope: Out of sight, out of mind. Remember Dennis Hastert? He was remarkably rich for an ex-high school wrestling coach.

IMO, each and every one should be charged a tremendous EXIT TAX.
As noted above by others this is a story about as fascinating as watching grass grow.
The average number of Congress-critters are going to retire and whine about it.
