Almost one-quarter of Trump voters say he shouldn't be GOP nominee if convicted: Poll

Almost a quarter of former President Donald Trump's supporters said he should not become the Republican presidential nominee in 2024 if he is convicted of a crime, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll.

The poll released on Wednesday showed that 24% of Republican voters who would vote for Trump next year said that "even if he has won the most votes in the primary," if he is convicted, Trump should not become the GOP's standard-bearer.

Trump faces 91 indictments across four criminal cases and is in the middle of a $250 million New York civil fraud trial. And on Tuesday, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled he should not appear on the state's presidential primary ballot, citing Trump's violation of the 14th Amendment, which bars anyone who has incited an insurrection from office. The former president will spend some time in the primary nominating contests in court as he battles the charges.

Despite the legal baggage, Trump remains the leader of the Republican primary field by double digits. Trump has painted himself as the victim of the "weaponization" of the Department of Justice and FBI, calling on his party to support him against the "deep state." And to a large extent, it has worked.

An overwhelming majority of Trump supporters surveyed, 70%, said he should be the GOP nominee if he "won the most votes in the primary, even if he is convicted of a crime." And 84% of his supporters said the charges against him "are mostly politically motivated," while 12% said he was "charged mostly because prosecutors believed he committed crimes."

However, the poll indicates there is some limit to Trump's advantageous lead. Two of the four criminal cases Trump faces are related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. While 72% of his supporters said he should not be sentenced to prison if convicted, 20% of his supporters said he should be sentenced if convicted. Another 23% of his supporters said he committed "serious federal crimes."

Trump's legal drama could cost him enough votes to ensure a second loss in 2024 if he were to get the nomination.

A set of New York Times/Siena College polls last month showed Trump losing around 6% of voters to President Joe Biden across five battleground states that could decide the fate of the presidency β€” Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

But Trump's allies have repeatedly signaled they will not abandon him if he were convicted.

"I've been traveling all over the country for his campaign," said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), one of Trump's staunchest defenders. "Everyone is solidly supporting him. The only theory that exists about that garbage is up here in this stupid city. He's going to blow away the primary whether he's sitting in a jail cell or not. Everybody hates this government, they think it's a bunch of communist bulls***, and he's going to win the general [election]."

The media loves polls because the can make them up to steer the results for the slow ones.

I disliked Trump and supported Cruz during the 2016 primary. Eventually, I gave him a chance based on some conversations with people close to him. Overall, I wasn't disappointed.

There are still a lot of things he's said that I don't like but I'm focused on what he's manage to accomplish while fighting both parties, the media, several alphabet agencies as well as inane, irrelevant concern trolls on social media platforms.

Democrats are sure pining for Trump to win the primaries but remember the first votes are over a month away. Maybe they’ll throw some new charges or another state will repeat Colorado days before a primary or caucus, sure. That’ll guarantee a Trump win. But, just the same, Trump’s massive Red Wave in 2020 never appeared, Republicans lost. Who’s to say that won’t happen in the primaries? Will Trump win Iowa? New Hampshire? or even Nevada? Last weekend he came to Reno and according to local news reports that spoke well of him, only 2,500 people showed up in a facility that could have held 20-30K. That’s less than 1% of the registered Republicans in the area. How many will bother showing up for the caucuses when everyone keeps saying it’s a Trump lock? I know of a number of non-Trump supporters that are definitely going, maybe we’ll beat Trump in the vote as I don’t hear much vote-level enthusiasm around here. It is mostly objection to Trump persecution, but not enthusiasm for another 4 years of Trump.

Trump loves polls that pat him on the back, whines about the rest. We all do that, nothing new.

Oh please. I don’t believe this for a minute. There isn’t any other candidate that isn’t a RINO except maybe Vivek. And none of them can get the votes to win.

DeSantis would lose so bad it would be a total embarrassment.

I never heard DeSantis trounced Newsome. LOL If he did, his poll numbers sure don’t reflect it.

They wish. If he’s convicted, which he will be, he is a sure winner in Nov. Technically, the CO SC just convicted him of something.

Did you watch the DeSantis-Newsom “debate”? DeSantis cleaned up—was presidential, was focused, had facts and figures, had plans, has successes. Okay, the only thing he lacks is the slicked-back hair, the smile, and, yes, he’s still working on getting out short answers. Trump will share stories, a big difference, yes, but DeSantis is the future of the party, a highly successful Republican, even if not a TV entertainer.

No, hardly any person watched it and Ron is never impressive. He is a backstabbing dullard that most people have moved on from except some Bush clan RINOs like you.

Trumps core support is likely 100 million votes. He has nothing to worry about. πŸ˜†

I will NEVER vote for Biden or Newsom or Harris or anyone like that, I won’t vote for Trump, Ramaswamy, or Haley.

Are you saying you’re better off now than when Trump was in office?

Before you spew left wing talking points, the state governors were behind the vast majority of the Covid closures (including forcing infected patients into nursing homes to boost the deaths). Trump pushed for a reopening before Easter and was blocked from every side.

Your “progressive” masters saw the economic boom and did everything they could to slow it down, even at the cost of the lives of our citizens.

Trump is like that crotchety old doctor who tells you bluntly how your crappy diet and slovenly lifestyle is the reason for your health problems. You go away angry but after you cool off you realize he was right.

That didn't help in in 2020 or help Republicans in 2022. Okay, in 2020 the real failing was not being prepared and hiring good attorneys as much as anything else. That would not have mattered in 2022.

Rat Party Headquarters will make sure that there’s at least one conviction...and probably more...that will be in by September 2024. The DC conviction *absolutely* will be in by then.Manhattan and Fulton County might be in too. The Miami case...maybe not. The prosecutors there know that a conviction is far from certain in that one.

Actually, while I cheered Trump in 2016 and 2020, he and Fauci cost me my business, led me to bankruptcy, and divorce. I want a new standard-bearer, DeSantis, to actually accomplish what Trump promised, to take us forward with a new generation of leaders, a veteran at that.

I suspect you are right, there will be at least one conviction. We’ll probably also see other states try and keep Trump off the ballot, even if only symbolicly. It good to hear that Colorado may cancel the primary and use a caucus to get around the court ruling if that becomes necessary. The party needs to step up and fight for their control of the party. How does a state or court get to tell a party who can be on the party ballot anyway?!
