Nikki Haley Blames ‘Democrat Plant’ for Civil War Question Gaffe
Breitbart ^ | 12/28/2023 | SEAN MORAN

Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley on Thursday blamed a “Democrat plant” for a question about what caused the Civil War. The presidential candidate neglected to include “slavery” in her list of reasons.

During a town hall on Wednesday, a member of the audience asked the former South Carolina governor what caused the Civil War. She gave an unclear word-salad response.

“I mean, I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do,” she said.

“I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are,” Haley continued. “I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people,” she said.

Yes, if you are a Republican taking questions there will be Democrat plants and if you are a Democrat taking questions, there will be Republican plants. Deal with that reality and learn to answer questions.

Going to go out on a limb here and without reading everyone elses' posts, this is the correct answer.

Just how much American History do you think she got as a child? Ask a recent school student who the first Republican President was. Actually, don’t even go that far back. Ask a recent student who America fought in WW II. What younger people don’t know about American history could ...... well, fill a book. Or two. Or 1,000.

Good point. Any Republican candidate for a national office should be able to recite the history of the founding of the Republican party, and its leading role in the fight against slavery and racial discrimination.

Haley is not only clueless about American history, but she is clueless about the history of the Republican party.

And she apparently didn't know that the civil war started because South Carolina seceded from the Union. Laws about slavery were certainly an issue, but that issued had existed for many years without the outbreak of war.

Well the **** got confused and started speaking out of school about the next CW, instead of the last one?

Democrats started the first CW and will most assuredly start the next one as well.

She would have made me happy :) if she’d said that the Civil War happened because Democrats wanted to keep their slaves.

“word salad” does not begin to describe it.

Not only that, in politics you have to be prepared for all possible “gotcha” questions no matter who asks them.

“If you still linger in some 1860 mentality...I feel sorry for you and your kin-folks.”

Here's why a recent American thought one Confederate was still relevant:

August 9, 1960

Dear Dr. Scott:

Respecting your August 1 inquiry calling attention to my often expressed admiration for General Robert E. Lee, I would say, first, that we need to understand that at the time of the War between the States the issue of secession had remained unresolved for more than 70 years. Men of probity, character, public standing and unquestioned loyalty, both North and South, had disagreed over this issue as a matter of principle from the day our Constitution was adopted.

General Robert E. Lee was, in my estimation, one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America; he was a poised and inspiring leader, true to the high trust reposed in him by millions of his fellow citizens; he was thoughtful yet demanding of his officers and men, forbearing with captured enemies but ingenious, unrelenting and personally courageous in battle, and never disheartened by a reverse or obstacle. Through all his many trials, he remained selfless almost to a fault and unfailing in his faith in God. Taken altogether, he was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history.

From deep conviction, I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee's calibre would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the Nation's wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.

Such are the reasons that I proudly display the picture of this great American on my office wall.

Sincerely,

Dwight D. Eisenhower

“What does the CW have to do with anything?”

The existence of our synthetic constitution for one thing.

And the homosexual marriage amendment that was passed with a secret provision to keep Trump off the 2024 election ballot.

And the one million page Federal Register to regulate your conduct; or is it two million pages now?

In any event, after the disaster at Appomattox the smarties in Washington D.C. can dictate the size of mudflaps on trucks driving state roads.

Well, she did say this:

government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people

She was probably worried about offending people who say the Civil War was not about slavery but about states' rights and she was trying to keep every possible voter.

The Unionists fought for many reasons. The secessionists fought for one: the preservation of the institution of slavery.

Actually, I seem to recall that McClellan nearly outpolled Lincoln in popular votes but got very few electoral votes.

"Actually, I seem to recall that McClellan nearly outpolled Lincoln in popular votes but got very few electoral votes."

If you're talking about newspaper polls, it sounds like the lame stream media of 1864 was as bad at conducting Presidential polls as they are today.

"When all the votes were tallied, Lincoln won the election in a landslide, defeating McClellan by more than 500,000 popular votes and 191 electoral votes. An estimated 78 percent of Union soldiers cast their ballots in favor of Lincoln. McClellan took just three states: Kentucky, Delaware and his home state of New Jersey."

The Election of 1864

I attended a Lincoln Symposium at Ford's Theater many years ago. One of the speakers gave a talk on Lincoln's memo that he had penned before the election, where he was convinced that he wouldn't be re-elected. I had never heard of it until that time, despite having read many books on Lincoln long before I attended the symposium. The memo is discussed in this article.

Haley’s explanation is worse than her original answer.

Her original answer was evocative of the ending of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. At the end, Lincoln asks if government of, by and for the people should perish from the earth. This seems to align with Haley’s original answer that the Civil War was about our form of government.

But, also in the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln said the outcome of the war would decide whether a government dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal could long endure, a reference not just to slavery, but also to any form of subordinated status. And, just before the end, Lincoln asked whether this country would have a new birth of freedom, in context, a reference to freeing the slaves.

You would be surprised at how much the civil war still affects our lives. Roe v Wade was a consequence of the civil war. Gay marriage was another. Banning prayer in Schools was another. Anchor babies is another.

Although it should not be the 14th Amendment has become a great evil thanks to the evil actions of federal judges

If you look at the Debates on the amendment in congress the meaning of the words in the amendment are clear.

However judges did not take long at all to pervert the 14th for their own purposes.

United States v. Wong Kim Ark was decided in 1898 giving birthright citizenship in-spite of the fact that it was specifically excluded during the debates on the amendment.

The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was adopted on July 9, 1868. So it only took 30 years for the courts to forget what the amendment was intended to do and pervert if to their own uses and they have been doing it ever since.

I can’t imagine what’s in her pointy little head that makes her think PDJT would choose her after she betrayed him.
