Washington GOP Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers on Thursday announced that she would not seek reelection in 2024, marking the latest such announcement for the GOP.

McMorris Rodgers currently chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

"It’s been the honor and privilege of my life to represent the people of Eastern Washington in Congress. They inspire me every day," she said in a statement. "They are part of the strength and soul of America — the greatest experiment in self-governance the world has ever known. After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided the time has come to serve them in new ways. I will not be running for re-election to the People’s House."

She went on to thank her family for the support she received throughout her time in Congress and vowed to fulfill her duties as committee chair through the end of her time in Congress.

“ To me, it feels like a bunch of GOP are stepping down because they hope that Dems will replace them and hamstring President Trump with a Democrat Legislature.”

Yep. And I have to wonder what kinds of sinecures have been lined up for them to make these “sacrifices”.

This House seat is perfectly safe and could actually be improved if some conservative actually wins.

I sure hope you are correct. I am no fan of McMorris Rodgers so I will not mourn her absence in Congress.

That was in 2018, a down year for the GOP everywhere, and McMorris still won by 9.6%. Hardly an almost-loss.

It’s true that the 2018 *primary* was much closer (3.9 points) but the general was not close.

In McMorris’ actual last election (2022) she won by 19.3%. The new guy, whoever it is, probably won’t approach a 20-point win this year but there’s zilch to worry about unless the Republicans nominate a child molester or something.

Aside from 2018, no Democrat has come within 10% of winning in WA-5 since 1994, and the composition of the district has barely changed at all since then. Trump will win it in 2024 by about 10 points and so will whoever the GOP nominates for Congress (maybe even more than 10 points).

you got it!

But it’s also a great opportunity to get Trump republicans in office in place of RINOs!

Since George Nethercutt ousted Tom Foley, the WA-5 has been GOP. Given the way the my dear beloved Spokane has become, I doubt a conservative can win that seat anymore.

It saddens me.

Trump will win it in 2024 by about 10 points and so will whoever the GOP nominates for Congress.

I sure hope you're right. Have you heard of anyone interested who might be a good candidate? I can't think of anyone.

The local crop of state legislators seems to be a mixed bag, with voting records that fluctuate rather significantly.

Hopefully a prominent, conservative non-politician will step up.

The filing deadline is still 3 1/2 months away but there’s no need for the GOP to delay needlessly. The Democrats who have filed so far are a pretty sorry lot, but that’s to be expected. I don’t anticipate the national Democrat party choosing to waste any time or money in this district, when they have far better options elsewhere to gain House seats.

You seem to be dialed into the local Eastern Washington politics much better than I. Please ping me with any revenant intel you pick up. I don’t trust the media or the GOP for squat.
