Dems flip seat as Suozzi wins crucial special congressional election in New York to replace Republican George Santos
Fox News via MSN ^ | 02/13/2024 | Paul Steinhauser

Former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi has won a closely watched special election for a vacant House seat once held by former Republican Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from the chamber in December.

The Associated Press projected that Suozzi would defeat Republican county lawmaker Mazi Pilip, to win back his old job.

With the GOP hanging on to a razor-thin majority in the House, national Republicans and Democrats poured big bucks into a race in suburban New York City where immigration and border security, crime, and abortion were the top issues, and where the election was seen as a bellwether ahead of the all-but-certain November White House rematch between President Biden and former President Donald Trump. The Long Island district held for a decade by Democrats was flipped by Santos in the 2022 midterms. But Santos was kicked out of Congress less than a year into his tenure, after he was exposed for lying about his background and indicted for a slew of financial crimes.

Suozzi, who represented the district for six years before running unsuccessfully for governor, repeatedly tied Pilip to Santos, as well as to former President Donald Trump.

"Who knows what she really stands for? She's George Santos 2.0. It's the exact same nontransparent, phony baloney, just trying to get votes instead of saying what you really think," Suozzi charged on the eve of the election.

And Suozzi, a former mayor and county executive, argued that Pilip - who is in her second term as a county lawmaker - "is a far-right wing extremist" who is "totally in line with Mike Johnson and Donald Trump ."

Is it impolite to notice that ever since DJT became the face of the GOP and then installed Ronna as the GOP Chair, the GOP has been getting beaten like a rented mule? DJT inspires his supporters, but he motivates his opponents even more. Since the opponents control all the civic institutions in the nation, the outcomes are not good. The Dem objectives are to 1) win elections, and 2) exert power over all their opponents and reward their friends. DJT and Ronna’s objectives? Based on their actions and results, I got no idea.

The GOP has not won Nassau County in a presidential election since 1988. And Trump’s win in Suffolk was rather narrow.

President Trump’s post on Truth Social regarding the election:

“Republicans just don’t learn, but maybe she was still a Democrat? I have an almost 99% Endorsement Success Rate in Primaries, and a very good number in the General Elections, as well, but just watched this very foolish woman, Mazi Melesa Pilip, running in a race where she didn’t endorse me and tried to “straddle the fence,” when she would have easily WON if she understood anything about MODERN DAY politics in America. MAGA, WHICH IS MOST OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, STAYED HOME - AND IT ALWAYS WILL, UNLESS IT IS TREATED WITH THE RESPECT THAT IT DESERVES. I STAYED OUT OF THE RACE, “I WANT TO BE LOVED!” GIVE US A REAL CANDIDATE IN THE DISTRICT FOR NOVEMBER. SUOZZI, I KNOW HIM WELL, CAN BE EASILY BEATEN!”

The RNC is virtually non-existent in blue areas at the local level. Having lived in Massachusetts and now greater NYC for most of my life, I can't count the number of local seats on the ballot that go uncontested - that is, no Republican is even on the ballot as a choice.

The response from the RNC is that they want to focus their resources on "winnable" seats, but the blue areas just keep expanding. For example, Connecticut was a reliable red state until fairly recently.

Huge structural change is needed at the RNC - not just at the top level.

Nassau county has a lot of conservatives. A better candidate and deploying people like Scott Pressler to get out the vote would have retained this seat for the Republicans. But it looks like they didn't even try.

Well then we are succeeding beyond our wildest dreams.

We are losing college-educated whites who were high-propensity voters but have gained a huge number of low-propensity voters who apparently just don't show up

Either find a way to turn out those people or get used to the idea of Kamala Harris leading a Democrat House and Senate next year.

Re: "the immigration catastrophe is screwing up NYC - should have been an easy GOP win"

The alleged Republican has two immigrant parents.

I do not know if she is USA born, or naturalized.

I saw her speak twice on the Fox News evening shows. My instant first impression - she has no chance of winning.

A week ago, she was trailing by 4% in the latest poll.

The only hard numbers I saw last night were early voters, and she was trailing by 20%.

The Democrats have amazing discipline. I am thinking they did not not take Santos seriously in 2022 and got beat by low turn out.

They will never make that mistake again.

true-they never attack each other as GOP do, and go for any win as they know that is how they get power-GOPers we win on issues and lose elections.

“I WANT TO BE LOVED!”

I am not even sure what this means in the context of the entire long statement. Sometimes, however, I fear that Trump wants to be cheered by crowds in person, whether at rallies, restaurants, or wherever, more than he wants to get elected.

If his number one priority was to get elected, he would have stopped the name-calling and insults, which turns off so potential voters. Every time he attacks the personal characteristic of someone he does not like, many people with that characteristic turn against him. I am thinking of things like being short or having a pencil neck or being fat. Trump thinks it is funny, but it is not. It is mean.

The primary objective of many in the GOP — an objective far above anything and everything else — is to get re-elected. Why not get paid — and paid well — for cowering in the face of pure evil personified: the Democrat/Communist Party? Beats working for a living while paralyzed with fear of the Left as many American women and “men” do every hour of every day.

“It is so frustrating. Republican positions on immigration the economy resonate with the public.”

Not as much as abortion rights resonate with women. The GOP keeps thinking that women are going to get over the Dobbs decision. That’s not going to happen. Until reasonable access to abortion is the law of the land, the GOP is going to continue to get wiped out. Democrats are over-performing everywhere.

Better than 50-50 chance the Democrats are in control of the House by election time

The most recent results I can find - the NYC Republican female (Mazi Pilip) trails by 8% with 94% of ballots counted.

Trump came to Washington state in 2022 to campaign for a close Congressional race.

Since Trump lost Wash state by 20% in 2020, I thought that was a bad political decision.

The GOP candidate did lose, but there is really no way to calculate what impact the Trump visit had.

“If his number one priority was to get elected, he would have stopped the name-calling and insults...”

You sound like a RINO!!!/sc

That is his shtick. He was just today insulting Adam Schiff for no particular reason, maybe because he misses the drama of the impeachments. Can you calculate how little the average American voter cares about Adam Schiff one way or the other?

As to “I WANT TO BE LOVED”...Wow, just wow. Among other things, why is it in quotes in his original message? Is he quoting his own id? Can you imagine if Biden said or wrote such a thing? I know he’s adept at trolling but this comes off as just plain wacky.

MAJOR FAIL on the part of the RNC, NYS GOP and local party committees.

First off, not the best candidate.

2nd, when will we learn to step up our absentee voting, the Dems beat us there by well over 10%.

Money, GOP outspent 2-1, where the heck is the state GOP AND the House election committees.

Total Party fail.

New York State is no bellwether for the rest of the country. Democrat is the default in any major metropolitan area of New York. They have a machine, and really stupid voters. Only upstate do you have any sanity.

Kevin McCarthy represents the 20th District of California. Have to assume that’s not a major metro area, but can’t find any information on it. If his retirement is effective right now, Gavin Nuisance gets to pick his successor until the election. If he just steps down after the election, it might actually be a fair election. Any info on the 20th’s predilections?
