Judge fines Donald Trump more than $300 million, bars him from running businesses in N.Y. for three years

The judge who presided over a civil business fraud trial against Donald Trump and his company has issued his decision in the case.

Judge Arthur Engoron ordered the former president and the Trump Organization to pay over $364 million in damages, and bars Trump "from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation or other legal entity in New York for a period of three years."

The judgment is the second this year against Trump after he was hit last month with an $83.3 million verdict in writer E. Jean Carroll's defamation case against him. The former president could also face four criminal trials this year as his presidential campaign barrels toward the November election, with the first set to begin in New York state court on March 25th.

New York Attorney General Letitia James had been seeking $370 million from Trump, his company and its top executives, including his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, alleging "repeated and persistent fraud" that included falsifying business records and financial statements. James had argued those financial statements were at times exaggerated by as much as $2.2 billion.

It wasn’t a criminal trial and he did defend himself. Not well enough apparently.

HOW are property taxes done in NY??

IF based upon the value of the buildings—— & Trump was taxed on HIS evaluation of HIS properties, and the TRIAL says he OVERSTATED those values-—

THEN, TRUMP SHOULD BE OWED A VAST AMOUNT OF MONEY IN THE DIFFERENCE.

NEW YORK BETTER PAY UP.

Anyone in NY who ever fudged the numbers on a mortgage application and later turned over the property for a tidy profit needs to understand that this could be them. If the state needs some extra cash for, say, migrant benefits, I would suggest a bounty system be set up. :-)

Because the law mandated a “bench trial” decided by a judge.

“Getting tired of winning yet?”

Actually we are winning. The abjact corruption of our government and judiciary is on full display. This ruling will be overturned on appeal.

“President Trump will appeal the ruling and seek a stay to halt enforcement next week.”

I believe he has to post a 70 million dollar bond first in order to appeal.

This was Manhattan; a jury trial there would reflect a population that voted only 14.5 percent for Trump in 2020. Quite frankly, I would be pleased if most of NYC pulled out of the union and took NE New Jersey with them.

My post was in response to a constitutional argument against fines of this sort.

There was a trial, fines like this are not new, wrongdoing was found to the court’s satisfaction, there will be appeals.

The NY AG’s office requested a bench trial. Habba could have requested a trial by jury, but she failed to respond to the state’s motion.

“Former President Trump has repeatedly complained about the lack of a jury in his New York civil fraud trial, but his own legal team appears to have failed to request one.

Why it matters: Trump has claimed it’s “unfair” that the judge in the case opted for a bench trial, without a jury. But the court docket shows that while Attorney General Letitia James filed a document requesting a bench trial, Trump’s lawyers never filed any corresponding document requesting a jury.

If Trump’s team had requested a jury, then Judge Arthur Engoron would have had to consider both sides’ requests.
