Albany Dems want to scrap Hochul’s proposed education cuts, raise taxes on high earners

Democrats in the state legislature want to scrap Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposed cuts to education funding — and jack up taxes on New York’s highest earners.

The state Senate’s wide-ranging response to Hochul’s budget proposal, released late Monday, also dashes New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ plea to extend his control over Big Apple public schools.

The Senate’s proposal is a largely symbolic part of the process meant to scope out the parameters around which legislative leaders and the governor will hammer out the state’s budget behind closed doors in the coming weeks.

Hochul’s $233 billion budget proposal released in January includes changes to the state’s formula for distributing education funding called foundation aid. Under Hochul’s plan, 337 school districts, nearly half, would see a reduction in the amount of foundation aid they received this year.

Democrats and Republicans quickly and loudly rejected the education cuts along with powerful advocacy groups and unions like New York State United Teachers.

Democrats will never cut school funding. They get 95% of the teacher union vote and that’s alot of voters. Schools are the largest employers in many counties, perhaps up there with county (government) workers. They mostly vote DEM

“High Earners” is right up there with “Fair Share”. Who’s considered a “High Earner” and how much is your “Fair Share”? Dems love to throw out these nebulous sayings. This is their marketing strategy.

Dems love to throw out these nebulous sayings.

They don't want to be pigeon holed as to who they can tax more.

Under their budget, New Yorkers making more than $5 million a year would see their tax rate increased likely move to Florida. Those making more than $25 million would see their tax rate jump even more would definitely move to Florida.

Sounds great. Drive the workers and movers and shakers out of New York!

That’ll show ‘em!

Because there are still some producers that have not yet fled New York.

On the plus side, when all of the producers have fled, NY can confiscate their vacant homes to house illegal aliens.

I met a developer who moved his multimillion dollar company from NY to Florida. This was a good ten years ago. He was tired of getting nickel, dimed and dollar’d to death. He also had an extensive gun collection* and they were in the process of making it illegal to own or possess types and quantities. He was a native New Yorker and really, really hated the government there. How many small companies like his have quietly left in the last ten or so years?

* He whipped out photographs of his guns like some guys show off their grandkids.

Under the category of “not enough money to go around,” Democrats are angling against each other to “get theirs.” Carnage expected....

I lived in upstate NY for a few years in the 90s. Education funding is totally rigged. If a town wanted to cut spending they are limited to extra curricular activities and busing. Teachers and principals are totally off limits.

What is killing the State are Dems and RINOs who are driving both businesses and residents out of NYS. What used to be a beautiful state which was just about the most attractive place to live and work, is now heading downhill faster than a four man bobsled. Go ahead and raise taxes on the upper income crowd and watch how the exit from NYS takes off like a rocket. For years, upstate NY has been an economic disaster, and now NYC is rapidly following suit.

I doubt Hochul came up with education cuts out of the blue. She’s probably following a legislative or regulatory formula based on per student aid. Families left the state. Fewer students.
