Commuter killed after being pushed in front of moving NYC subway train in unprovoked attack

A commuter was struck and killed by a Manhattan subway train Monday after being shoved onto the tracks by an emotionally disturbed person in an unprovoked attack, according to police and sources.

The victim was pushed onto the tracks as a northbound 4 train was entering the East 125th Street and Lexington Avenue station in East Harlem just before 7 p.m., police sources said.

The train was unable to stop in time and fatally struck the individual, an adult male whose identity has not been released.

The man was pronounced dead shortly after and a suspect, described as an emotionally disturbed person, was taken into custody, according to the sources. Charges are pending.

The deadly shove comes amid a surge of violent crime within the city’s subway system including a high-profile deadly shooting on a crowded train car in Brooklyn earlier this month.

The number of felony assaults in the sprawling underground transit system jumped 53% last year from pre-pandemic times, with 570 such attacks in 2023 compared to 373 in 2019, data shows.

It’s unclear what is causing the alarming trend, but some incidents — perhaps including Monday’s deadly assault — point to mental illness as a potential contributing factor.

Half of the attacks on MTA workers in the subway system last year involved a suspect suffering from a mental illness.

Of the 38 people charged with 41 separate assaults on transit system employees, 20 of them had documented psychological problems, according to a Post investigation.

Many of the individuals who assaulted the workers also had a criminal history.

Monday’s alleged shover was identified by sources as 45-year-old Carlton McPherson.

McPherson has a prior assault arrest from October 2023, sources told The Post. He was freed on bond and is due back in court in July.

All I said was that it is irrelevant to me why they are dangerous. If they are dangerous, they need to be taken out. I don’t care if it’s mental illness or drugs or anything.

Why would my position upset you?

Perp’s photo and name are in the article. And no, you don’t need to look. What are the odds that 100% of the “mentally disturbed” subway pushers would be members of the most privileged group of people on the planet? I’m really tired of them…so, so tired.

Would you prefer Bernhard Goetz be standing next to you?

No guarantee Goetz would have be able to get around the National Guard while conceal carrying.

The people mover system at DFW airport is a good example of how to safely load / unload people on a train. The only access to the cars is thru doors that are the same width as the sliding doors in the train cars. When a train arrives both the train doors and the station doors open at the same time.

There is no way that someone can find themselves on the tracks either by accident or intent.

I grew up in NYC and took the subway everyday for decades, albeit when it was much, much safer. You grow comfortable and nonchalant. Things like this literally never ever happened back then.

cherry: "jail him for the rest of his pathetic, useless life."

mass55: Just shoot him and save the taxpayers some money.

The two approaches are not mutually exclusive. Do both. Put him in jail, then shoot him. Soon.

Evil exists. If Jesus casted out demons, they too exist. That may be why treatments are not working.
Anyone who thinks they can treat evil has never seen it put someone in a gas chamber, then just claim they were following orders to avoid punishment. I haven’t seen it myself, but the testimony of those who survived is not to be dismissed.
Evil rapes women and children until their pelvis breaks,,, the isis drug is real, but the driver is not the drug.

So - where were all the Guardsmen?

Is Adams still saying the danger is just a “perception”?

Last time I visited NYC, it was for the NY Boat Show. I got onto the subway and the only problem I had (in 1990) was a few Chinese bringing a dragon model in the subway car. It was the weekend of Chinese New Year, so they were going to a parade.

****after being shoved onto the tracks by an emotionally disturbed person****

More proof the mental hospitals closed in the 1970s need to be reopened and the 1950s rules for incarceration brought back.

"Do both. Put him in jail, then shoot him. Soon."

Why make the officers and other staff have to process this fool, all the paperwork, the fingerprinting, photographing, making sure he's fed, seeing someone from the medical staff, giving him his jail uniform, and his personal supplies? That all costs tax payers money too.

If Hochul hadn’t assigned the NG to check for weapons, the killer could have shot the victim after he was dead.
