U.S. Navy Mocked for Photo of Commander With Rifle Scope Mounted Backwards

A U.S. Navy photo posted to X is being mocked for showing a commander shooting an AR-platform rifle with the scope mounted backwards.

The photo shows a commander, identified as Commander Cameron Yaste by the Defense Blog, shooting an AR-platform rifle with what appears to be a Trijicon VCOG scope atop it. Problem: the scope is mounted backwards. This means the commander had no sight picture whatsoever as he fired the gun.

This was shared today by the official US Navy Instagram.

When you see it try not to break your phone. pic.twitter.com/udV0hyvdmJ

To confuse things I used an AR in basic training at Fort Polk, it also had the catch everything 3 prong flash suppressor.

“the original Colt/ArmaLite AR-15 was a select-fire (fully automatic) rifle, and the AR-15 was adopted in 1962-1963 and became the M16. The first M16s widely issued to US troops in Vietnam were marked COLT AR-15 on the receiver. Most of the early soldiers in Vietnam called their rifles AR-15s.”

Nice VCOG optic. I can only guess that either some Gunners Mate in the armory thought it would be funny, or the commander brought a personal rifle that he’s never actually fired.

Navy narrative will be he was plinking the eclipse, so he turned the scope around as not to hurt eyes.

That’s because they don’t or at least didn’t trust us with them. The closest I got to a firearm in the Navy was to look at a 1911 in boot camp. On the one occasion that someone was issued a firearm was on a detachment to Roosevelt Rhodes PR. We had to help provide perimeter security for the base and on of my squadron mates was issued an M-16 and he thought he heard something in the brush and took a shot. Resulted in an investigation, but no punishment for the sailor.
The Navy didn’t trust me with a firearm but did allow me to load nuclear weapons. 🤣😂🤣

Obviously he's such an expert marksman he mounted it backward on purpose so the porpoise he was aiming at appeared much further away, thus giving it a fighting chance.

I can rest easier now knowing such a badass is out there guarding our freedom.

Until about the 1930s sailors used to fill in as combat soldiers on land, they would go armed and ready to fight for shore missions.

Yours is the best explanation, at least in a “Zen and the art of scope mounting” kind of way.

The Biden military. Not as ridiculous as wearing a construction hat backwards though.

I suppose a photo would be too much for ask for, or do you get a kick-back from Breitbart for the ‘clicks’ you send their way?
