The possibility of Ukraine's army collapsing cannot be ruled out a US official has warned, report says

The possibility of Ukraine's army collapsing cannot be ruled out, an unnamed US official told Bloomberg.

The report said, citing talks with multiple officials, that Ukraine's position on the battlefield is at its most fragile moment since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Ukraine's war effort has been weakened in recent months by a severe shortage of ammunition, dipping morale among Ukrainian soldiers, and the impasse in Congress over US aid to Ukraine, Bloomberg reported.

One major risk is a collapse of Ukraine's line of defense, which would allow Russia to make a major advance, Bloomberg said, citing an official speaking anonymously.

In recent weeks, building on its capture of Avdiivka, Russia has advanced incrementally in eastern Ukraine, claiming new territory and threatening the town of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Friday that the government would allocate a further Hr 3.88 billion (almost $100 million) to help reinforce fortifications, primarily in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions, which sit near Russia's border.

However, The Wall Street Journal reported in March that although Ukrainian troops were building fortifications in preparation for an oncoming Russian offensive, there are fears that not enough progress is being made.

Putin isn’t Hitler so you are wrong on the first premise of your argument.

What defensive treaty do we have with Ukraine, what do we owe them?

Budapest Memorandum

Money is not the problem, we can’t produce the weapons quickly, we have no industrial base left to do so.

People here have no idea how bad it is.

This isn't 1941 when America could crank up it's industrial muscle and militarize overnight.

We've shuttered steel mills and foundries. We don't make a single computer chip or pressed circuit board in this country. Even if we wanted to build more munitions factories, the environmental impact study alone would take a decade. And then we'd have to deal with DEI contracts and hiring.

Russia's foundries are running 24/7. They produce twice the number of artillery shells as every NATO country combined. China has over 230 TIMES the shipbuilding capacity as the United States. They don't worry about environmental impact studies or if there are the required number of black transwomen pouring concrete.

The problem is we have the lack of political will.

All we need to do is to get a bunch of Titans of Industry like Elon Musk together so they can start to mass produce all the ammunition for Ukraine and we'll give them what they need.

The Russians botched the invasion in 2022 so at the time there was no reason for us to do anything. Or we thought so, in retrospect.

The Lord chose Israel in the Old Testament.

But He rejected them after repeated warnings against idolatry. And they were dispersed throughout the world.

The Jews longed for the Messiah, and then rejected Him when He was sent.

The Lord prefers those who fear Him, rather than those who claim His sanction for their earthly agendas.

That’s what bothers me more than anything about the evangelical unquestioning supporters of whatever Israel wants.

The West has undertaken some very foolish MidEast Wars that Israel wanted very much.

The Christian communities in those countries were destroyed as a result.

Israel wants to do it again with Syria. They want a Sunni Islamist takeover to break the alliance with Iran. The result will be that the Christian community in Syria will be destroyed.

Now the the Israel worshippers amongst the evangelicals might say that the price we pay to “bless Israel”.

I refuse to go along with that.

No he can’t. He couldn’t produce ventilators in 2020, and he can’t produce artillery ammunition in 2024.

The factories are gone. The companies that made the forging presses are gone. The tool and die makers are gone. The apprenticeships and technical programs that trained those tool and die makers are no longer offered.

The factories were outsourced. And the companies which made the factory tooling are also gone.

We differ some on the intermediary thoughts, but the conclusions are the same.
Needless foreign adventures while our country is dying are insane.

Back when Bakhmut was in play there was. Ukrainian guy named Denys something, who had a Youtube thing and he was always talking about Chasiv Yar a few miles to the west and how heavily defended it was. Now it seems to be in jeopardy itself. Two years too late but time for some diplomacy from Washington leading to peace talks instead of nasty warmongering for a lost cause.

we can’t produce the weapons quickly, we have no industrial base left to do so.

Really, we have no older weapons in storage?

US gave 200 Vietnam era M113's to Ukraine, while having 5,000 in storage. The Iraqi Army received 1,026 M113A2

US gave Ukraine 190 older Bradleys while 2,000 are in storage. Currently the XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle is being developed to replace the Bradley.

US gave Ukraine 31 Abrams tanks, while it has 3,100 in storage.

US gave Ukraine 20 ATACMS, while hundreds of older variants will have to be destroyed due to questions of reliability. The Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) is being currently tested and will replace the ATACMS.

US retiring planes(F15 and A10) instead of transferring to Ukraine:

Defense bill would let Air Force retire A-10s, F-15s

Not sure how repeating Reagan’s disasters is a good idea.

Sure, fall of the Soviet Union was a disaster. Okay

It’s just amazing how the patterns of past failed Empires just endless repeat.

Imperial overstretch abroad in the midst of profound decay at home.

One would think that no-one would ever do that, yet it has been done repeatedly. And we are living thru it right now.

I do not believe the United States could win a modern mechanized war today.

Hell, we can't even win asymmetrical warfare against enemies wearing sandals and wielding Kalashnikovs who heard goats for a living.

We are so far behind the curve.

We're really good at building cool, expensive congressional district gifts with lots of bells and whistles. It's all mired in the mud in Ukraine being used for Russian target practice.

We violated that as soon as we started arming Ukraine, long before this war and even 2014:

...the United States, United Kingdom and France) pledged non-military support to Ukraine in exchange for its adherence to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

...It refers to assurances, but unlike guarantees, it does not impose a legal obligation of military assistance on its parties...

It’s called a MEMORANDUM because the US Senate never voted on it, so like our “promise” of no NATO East expansion which we claim we do not need to adhere to, it’s just something someone once said but we are not bound by a official treaty.

Summary, we owe them nothing.
