Democratic candidates Peter Herzberg and Mai Xiong are projected to win their special elections in two Michigan state House races, allowing the party to regain full control of the state Legislature, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Xiong defeated Republican Ronald Singer in District 13, which includes parts of Detroit, Center Line and Warren in Macomb and Wayne counties, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Meanwhile, Herzberg defeated Republican Josh Powell in District 25, which includes parts of Wayne, Canton and Westland in Wayne County, according to the news outlet.

Xiong is a former refugee from Thailand who most recently served on the Macomb County board of commissioners. Herzberg was a member of the Westland City Council.

Just a little quibble

[Mai] Xiong is a former refugee from Thailand

There is no such thing as being a former refuge [Note: refugees come to the US legally after being vetted etc]. I suspect given his name he actually is not originally from Thailand.

Her own bio refutes the description as a refuge.

My late father, Vang Shoua Xiong, and mother, Der Vang, were born and raised in Laos. The CIA recruited my father when he was 17 to aid American soldiers during the Vietnam War. After the war, my parents fled to avoid persecution. In 1984, I was born in the Ban Vinai Refugee Camp in Thailand. My parents sought asylum in the U.S. and I was 3 when we were accepted.

She is Laotian, born in Thailand and came as a child of asylees. I suspect her family had a strong asylee case.

She took 65% of the vote replacing a democrat who moved on to become a mayor. Same with the other election. The two vacancies had created a 54-54 tie on the legislature, so this was not unexpected.

Not as depressing as it looks; these were two Democratic seats the incumbents vacated in midterm, leaving the Statehouse deadlocked 54-54 instead of D 56-54R. As I understand it, these are in Wayne County which is Detroit.

Thanks for the info.

Have to go get the file folders but my first and middle real names were after the great great grandfather who was born here and volunteered in the Civil War and along the Michigan Volunteers was in several of the bloodiest battles including Bull Run (Manassas) and Gettysburg. He made it back alive and is buried in Port Austin, Michigan with a G.A.R. marker (Grand Army of the Republic).
When Lincoln was told one of the Michigan units had just arrived he said “Thank God for Michigan!”

The Republican Party has no real ground game in the entire country. Well maybe they do if you count Scott Presslers efforts. Our GOO doesn’t care about connecting with people other than fat cats that can funnel money their direction.

Low turnout IMHO....as I’m in MI and wasn’t aware - even though I’m traveling, along with others from MI that also weren’t aware.

Summary from MarketWatch about Michigan:

“Democrats flipped both chambers in the 2022 midterms while maintaining control of the governor’s office to win a trifecta for the first time in 40 years. They moved quickly to roll back decades of Republican measures and implement the party’s agenda in their first year, including overhauling the state’s gun laws.”

The demographics in Wayne County are deceptive.

49% of the residents are classified as Non-Hispanic White.

However, the Census Bureau classifies North African and Middle East immigrants as White.

Wayne County has the largest, or one of the largest, Muslim populations in the USA.

At least 50% of the population is Black or Muslim.

At most, white Europeans are 40%, or less.

The Democrats do not need to cheat to win in local Wayne County elections.

“The Republican Party has no real ground game in the entire country.”

Shouldn’t make a damn bit of difference! Democrats are so off the charts god-awful that republicans shouldn’t even have to run one ad to win. But then there are far too many morons in this country.

The Michigan legislature was dominated by RINOs and sqishy moderates

It's not just Michigan, it's pretty much nation-wide.

The only takeaway should be(from the rank and file)...stop relying on politicians to right the wrongs. Politics is not the answer, never has been, never will be (for conservatives/patriots).

If we believe in the principles of a Republic...it's not suppose to be.

The opposition to EVERYTHING we believe in...will go to ANY length to defeat us, inside or outside of politics. The "destroy from within" strategy is rampant and is being very successful.

The rank and file conservative has been lethargic, providing little push-back... while the deep state intelligentsia has run roughshod over them, taking over finance, media, education, legal apparatuses, etc..

Jan 6 showed some fight...but we now know how OUR push-back will be treated...those political prisoners are rotting in jail, and more are being tracked down to be incarcerated. Their leader being persecuted/prosecuted to the full extend of "Deep State" law, which seems to have overtaken Constitutional law.

The rank and file democrat feels like they're winning the day, with a "throw the baby out(sometimes literally) with the bath water" mindset that has been brain-fornicated into them as "winning".

The faithful will tell you, this is meant to be(chaos/evil)

Others will tell you this is cyclical...the tide will turn.

People who fall for the "it can't happen here"...are naive.

It can, and it IS.

(3-2-1..until some rah rah says..."oh, boo-hoo...all is well"...so said many a cancer patient, who ignored the signs/held off on treatment...until it was too late)

I guess that’s OK. But it does go to show that people are still gonna vote stupid. Enough inroads haven’t been made yet.
