Columbia in chaos as hundreds of anti-Israel protesters defy order to vacate tent camp: ‘We will not back down’

Columbia University failed to bring disruptive anti-Israel protests under control Monday, as hundreds of protesters openly defied the school’s 2 p.m. ultimatum to vacate the campus encampment or face suspension and loss of access to dorms and class buildings.

“We will not back down,” student leaders proclaimed in a statement before the deadline expired.

As the deadline ticked away, hundreds of protesters remained on campus, beating drums and chanting slogans like “free, free, free Palestine” as they marched, beat drums and lounged around the tent city.

Police sources told The Post Monday afternoon that busloads of NYPD officers were standing by if summoned by the university. However, administrators had not asked cops to move in to remove students from the $90,000-per-year campus as it did April 18, during which 108 demonstrators were dragged away in cuffs.

Cops are not allowed on campus without authorization from the university.

In a statement to the student body Monday morning, embattled Columbia president Minouche Shafik made a final plea with student protesters to “voluntarily disperse” from campus, vowing to consider exploring “alternative internal options” to bring the crisis to a close.

[President]Shafik made clear that the protesters’ main demand — that the university divest from all companies that do business with Israel — was off the table.

The school also distributed notices around campus promising students amnesty from punishment if they turn themselves in to officials by the deadline and commit to obeying university policies...

According to the Columbia Spectator newspaper, students slapped with an interim suspension for flouting the deadline will be restricted from using all of Columbia’s “campuses, facilities and property, including all academic, residential and recreational spaces.” Students gather for a rally in support of a protest encampment on campus in support of Palestinians, despite a 2pm deadline.

The problem is that the unis are being told by their wealthy Jewish (and other) alumni donors that this has to be ended or no more money. The colleges are vacillating, wanting to support anti-Israel causes but not wanting to lose most of their funding.

There are a whole lot of young, silly girls in those photos; rebelling against something.

It looks like a lot of fathers have failed their daughters. And probably spent a lot of money doing it.

The police can economize by using low caliper bullets. Additional savings will be gained through the lack of court time needed to process the little low IQ marshmallow major turds, since they will not exist. In addition, the corrupt non-academic university will be deprived of funds they had planned to use to entice more naive, ill educated youth into a life of non-productivity and obnoxiousness. Columbia...embracing the loss of standards, morality, and productivity. Their new motto, “Failure IS an option.”

Kent State!

Glad you brought that up. I've heard so many so-called "conservatives" and libertarians vociferously condemn the National Guard and school administrators over that incident. But most people don't know of the murderous, destructive anarchy that was in play for WEEKS leading up to that climax. A few people getting shot was well warranted, and probably was not done soon ENOUGH.

Read Robert Bork's Slouching Towards Gomorrah for an eye-opening look at what really happened. Bork witnessed a lot of the destructive nihilism on college campuses first-hand.

Interesting that all of these “students” have tents in NYC.

It's also interesting that Columbia University has enough open space at ground level to put them all.

That space needs to be taxed at the rate developers would pay after building skyscrapers there.

There are a whole lot of young, silly girls in those photos; rebelling against something.

I saw a clip on Newsmax last week where a couple of those girls were asked exactly what it was they were protesting. They had no clue. One of them mumbled something about “Well, it just seems like the right thing to deeww…”

Neither of them appeared to be even slightly embarrassed about their lack of knowledge or purpose.

I suspect they went right back to taking duck-face selfies after the short interview concluded.

Just like 1966-1967 and the SWINE.

Reminds me of the old Li’l Abner comic strip from 1966 in which the Students Wildly Indignant about Nearly Everything (S.W.I.N.E.) take over the campus.
The terrified University Regents decide to sell the University! The only buyers were the Mafia who brings in the mob enforcers.
Here come the SWINE protesting!
I still get a thrill remembering how the leader of the S.W.I.N.E. used his front teeth to assault the brass knuckles of the mob enforcers. Who says brass won’t make a spark! These did. Big ones at that!
Anyone else remember that old comic strip? Could easily be reprinted today with no changes.
