Terry Clark Hughes Jr. Is Suspect in Deaths of 4 Officers in Charlotte, Police Say

Terry Clark Hughes Jr. is the 39-year-old suspect who opened fire at the scene where four law enforcement officers in Charlotte, North Carolina, were shot and killed on April 29, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Hughes was not the only shooter, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said in a news conference. “When they approached Hughes,” officers “were met by gunfire and returned the gunfire, striking” Hughes, who was found deceased in a yard, Jennings said.

Officers then received “additional gunfire from inside of the residence,” he said. It was not immediately clear whose bullets struck which officers. Police have not identified the other shooter, although two other people are in custody. Police confirmed they believe two people opened fire; Hughes opened fire first, Jennings said.

“On Monday, April 29, 2024, an armed suspect opened fire on law enforcement officers in the 5000 block of Galway Drive in the North Tryon Division,” police wrote in an April 29 news release.

“The deceased suspect has been identified as Terry Clark Hughes, Jr, 39,” police wrote. WSOC-TV reporter Joe Bruno confirmed that the above mugshot is Hughes Jr.

“Four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers were shot, one of which succumbed to his injuries. Additionally, four officers from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were shot, three of which succumbed to their injuries,” CMPD wrote.

Three of the deceased officers have been named; they are North Carolina Department of Adult Correction veterans, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott and CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer.

Chief Johnny Jennings said around 1:30 p.m., a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force went to serve a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. They were met with gunfire when they approached the person, Jennings said, so the officers returned fire, hitting the suspect.

The suspect died in the front yard of the home on Galway Drive, Jennings said.
Afterward, the officers were shot at from inside the home, triggering a standoff, Jennings said.

“Since the Miami FBI shoot out in 86.”

The Anderson book on the subject has reportedly been sold out. Abe books is asking for copies at $900 each. (Originally ~$90).

I have a few copies available at $50 each.

100% correct.

I’ve met a great many Border Patrol Agents, and they all, to a man (female agents) are another story) patriotic and hard core MEN from the 50’s.

My son was a BP agent got in a gun battle with a smuggler and killed the guy. High fives all around when other Agents showed up. Even HQ dudes were on his side.

Policy required he go to counseling before returning to duty. Some lefty females with a sociology degree met him and as they sat down, she reached under her chair and pulled out a box of Kleenex and said: “now, please tell me what happened.”

She had never dealt with BP Agents before.

My son told her he was trained to respond the way he did, and he did his job and was pleased he wasn’t hit.

The mandatory three visits passed and she did not recommend he return to duty. Recommended another session because my son didn’t demonstrate remorse for taking a life. His BP supervisor said “screw that, your shift starts tonight.”

No PC caving there.

Please see Post 27 for a different opinion.

BP moral is tanking and Agents leaving under the administration. The ones that stay are mostly wimps that are recent hires expecting to do diaper duty.

They are mostly not real men. The real men are leaving.

That armchair worrier needs to be suited up and put on the front lines.

She would change her tune mighty quickly.

The warrant was for possession of a firearm by a felon and evading arrest? Now four officers are dead, shot by an unknown person in the house? I’ve read several stories about this incident and none of them make much sense.

~~~~~
Jun 29, 2012
ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. —
A man was arrested late Thursday after crashing during a police pursuit that reached speeds of 115 mph, deputies said.
Terry Clark Hughes Jr., 27, was arrested on the on-ramp to Interstate 40-85 westbound at mile marker 150. Hughes’ last known addresses are in Charlotte and Semora in Caswell County.
The pursuit began around 11:30 p.m. after a 2000 Nissan Altima turned around at a license checkpoint at Highway 62 and E. Hughes Mill Road, Alamance County deputies said.
The pursuit continued onto Highway 49 before getting onto I-40/85, deputies said.
The car lost control on the interstate on-ramp and collided with a tree, deputies said. The driver, Hughes, was treated at a hospital for minor scrapes and bruises, deputies said.
Hughes faces a total of 11 counts, including possession of cocaine, posession of less than 1/2 ounce of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a felon, driving while license revoked and speeding 115 mph in a 55 mph zone.
He also was served on outstanding warrants from four counties, deputies said.
“This is one of the biggest things of that nature since the Miami FBI shoot out in 86. “
Actually, no... there’s this:
From Wiki: “On July 7, 2016, Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed and shot police officers in Dallas, Texas, killing five, injuring nine others, and wounding two civilians. Johnson, a 25-year-old Army Reserve Afghan War veteran, was angry over police shootings of black men. “
