Georgia Primary - Running Thread
Atlanta Journal Constitution, Various ^ | 8/20/02 | N/A

Posted on 08/20/2002 9:02:36 AM PDT by Coop

Excerpt:

A light but steady flow of voters was reported at several metro Atlanta polling places during the early stages of today's primary election, and at least one precinct was briefly shut down because of confusion over redistricting.

Voters have faced massive precinct shifts as a result of this year's once-a-decade redrawing of political district maps.

Confusion over the redistricting prompted the precinct at Margaret Harris High School, off North Druid Hills Road in DeKalb County, to suspend voting for about 20 minutes shortly after opening today, said poll manager Maria Arvelo.

Arvelo said the precinct had recently been moved from the 4th Congressional District to the 5th District, but after several voters came in thinking they were still in the 4th District, "we had to shut the precinct down until we got clarification on it."

"People were confused because there are signs along North Druid Hills saying Cynthia McKinney and Denise Majette, and people were like, 'Well, I wasn't notified [of the change],' " Arvelo said. "But they were notified because their voter's registration says District 5."

She said the precinct would remain open an extra 20 minutes -- until 7:20 p.m. -- to make up for the time it closed this morning.

At the Briarwood Recreation Center in DeKalb, about 10 people were waiting when the polls opened at 7 a.m.

Most of those voting during the first 15 minutes were casting ballots in the Democratic primary, said Dottie Cadenhead, the poll manager.

The only early problem was one voter -- the first person in one in line -- who was at the wrong precinct, Cadenhead said.

"He was disappointed, but I think he'll make his way over to another precinct," she said.

At DeKalb's Medlock Elementary School, 60 people had either already voted or were waiting in line to vote at 7:30 a.m.

In northwest Atlanta, Bill Dennis, poll manager at Morris Brandon Elementary School precinct, said the line upon opening was "about average" for a primary, with about 10 people queued.

Dennis said that fewer than 20 people voted during the first 30 minutes. The turnout was even lighter elsewhere.

End of excerpt.

I agree. This is not necessarily a net win for us.

you have to celebrate when get a chance. If the Democraps are pissed about losing McKinney, then I am going to celebrate having a hand in defeating her! We'll worry about the next battles tomorrow. Tonight is for partying!

Will Cindy concede like that with Denise??

If I were Denise, I wouldn't let Cindy get within pistolshot range, and I *dang* sure wouldn't let Billy get within knife range!

FLASH Premium (11:10 PM) InsiderAdvantage reports at this hour that approximately 45,000 votes remain to be counted as McKinney roars from behind carrying precincts by as much as 80%. Earlier, 115 out of 161 precincts in DeKalb—Denise Majette 37,781 v. Cynthia McKinney 25,023.

Maybe I should revert to the 5% win prediction.

Many of us shared the same experience. Without FR, I would have gone stark raving mad. I can't even think of the state of Florida without getting sick to my stomach.

Sometimes integrity, courage and bean counting go together

......as does perjury, obstruction of justice and the Presidency.

with your uneducated comments about Linder being in any way a conservative

You really don't have a clue what you are talking about. There is barely any difference between the voting records of John Linder and Bob Barr. Your man lost this one, he is a great Conservative. Don't trash the other Conservative that won though-- Linder is no RINO.

You sound just like me during the Florida mess. I did not even exist in the rest of the world. I gained weight, did not sleep, let my house go to h@ll, temporarily lost my friends for lack of contact, and had unending heartburn. I NEVER want to live through something like that again!

Amen, but I lost weight as a result and nearly lost my hubby and son over it. Never slept election night and was shocked to see people going on with their lives the following day and the 29 days that followed. Just seeing albore and Donna Brazile gets my stomach churning all over again.

What are the DU idiots saying?

Well, certainly nothing original. Mainly along the lines of "those damn Repuglicans did it AGAIN!" and various moans asking why GOP voters are allowed to vote RAT ballots in primaries. (Of course, they never asked that question in 2000 in the states where RATS crossed over to disrupt GOP nominations.)

Most interesting of all is the relativelack of activity in the McKinney threads. It's as if most of them believe that if they don't talk about it, it isn't really happening.

Anyway, with your uneducated comments about Linder being in any way a conservative ....

Rightwing2, there is no pleasing you, my friend, I am convinced between this and the Smith/Sununu thread. If you are to the point of excommunicating people w/95%-plus conservative voting records, you are doomed to live your life a very unpleasant and pissed off person.

Keep all future posts here prepared through that lens and you'll sound a lot less outrageous.

80% is bad. The overall number I was hearing from the campaign was that Majette needed 30% of the vote in the south of the county.

For those of you from outside Atlanta, if you saw the Slave Reparations Rally on the mall in DC on CSPAN on Saturday, you saw a demographic similar to the south of DeKalb County. McKinney country.

ROFL. She'll probably be a professor somewhere. That's all she's qualified for, and where a bit*h like here would fit in with her America hating views.

DU is now calling for her to run in November as an independent! BWA-HA-HAAAA!
