God in Winter: Pondering the Gift of Snow
Msgr. Charles Pope January 13, 2019
It snowed yesterday in Washington, D.C. It wasnt anything epic, just a decent six-incher.
There were drawbacks, of course: Mass attendance was poor, and I had to get up early to shovel a path to the doors. (Thank you, Lord, for the helpers you sent!) Despite the inconvenience, snow incites wonder and awe in me.
I realize that not everyone likes snow, but it is an amazing work of God. He takes a barren winter landscape and creates it anew. I can almost hear Him saying, Behold, I make all things new!
We often walk past the glory of God hardly noticing the gifts He provides every day. Tonight and tomorrow I dont want to miss winters white gown. Maybejust maybeGod can get a few of us here on the East Coast to stop for a moment, rest, and behold His glory.
Having to cancel a few plans because of the weather can provide a wonderful opportunity to become reacquainted with our family and even with our very self. Just looking out the window and marveling at the snow as it falls with hypnotic and calming steadiness can be a prayerif we think of God who sends it. Wherever you are, dont walk through life and miss the glory of God!
In the Book of Sirach there is a beautiful and poetic description of God and the majestic work He creates even in the dead of winter. Enjoy this excerpt from Sirach and reflect spiritually on the glory of God in winter.
A word from God drives on the north wind. He scatters frost like so much salt; It shines like blossoms on the thornbush. Cold northern blasts he sends that turn the ponds to lumps of ice. He freezes over every body of water, And clothes each pool with a coat of mail. He sprinkles the snow like fluttering birds. Its shining whiteness blinds the eyes, The mind is baffled by its steady fall. (Sirach 43, selected verses)
The video below brings back childhood memories of the joy and wonder of snow; I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Oops, just the picture.
Monsignor Pope Ping!
He said according to the news, the snow reached the patio of his 9th floor apartment.
Snow makes the expression “white as snow” understandable.
A true gift indeed.
Oh snow is so wonderful < /sarcasm>
I remember well the morning after GWBs inauguration. Snow was falling as we walked to the DC Metro after the first Freepers (unofficial) inaugural Ball. The next morning the mall was covered in a smooth (Conservatives do not leave a place full of trash) layer of white, almost like Mother Nature had cleansed away the filth of the previous administration. It was so beautiful.

People in the Eastern & Beltway cities panic when there’s an inch of snow, so I can only imagine it would be the end of the world to them if they got what we’re used to in these parts. In the Upper Midwest, it’s just comes with the territory.
It's not up yet but Fr. Parkers had a most timely homily on the inheritance we have as God's sons and daughters, he drew on examples of two(or three) individuals that had enormous inheritances and died never having know of it.
You can look for it here when it gets posted later this week.

Nice...I love snow. It’s the cold wind that I hate.
I love that blue light that you get during snow.
Sometimes you don't have a viable choice which is why I live where there is rarely any snow.
That’s just beautiful -— reminds me of my childhood home in Erie, PA -— you got the color and light just right.
If you like snow, you’ll LOVE Valdez, Ak. Anywhere from 20 to 50 feet in a winter. Hubby plowed snow on Thompson Pass for years. He was 6’ tall, but I have pictures of him standing next to a straight cut in the driveway that was over his head. We OWNED a loader for snow removal.
Not real fond of the stuff. Lived in upstate NY for 5 years and got my fill of it there.

let it snow,
let it snow"
