European federalists seeking to transform the 27-member European Union into a European superstate -- a so-called United States of Europe -- have revived a decades-old proposal to build a European army.
The call for a supranational army, part of a push for Europe to achieve "strategic autonomy" from the United States, is being spearheaded by French President Emmanuel Macron, who, as part of his reelection campaign, apparently hopes to replace outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the de facto leader of Europe.
Macron claims that Europe needs its own military because, according to him, the United States is no longer a reliable ally. He cites as examples: U.S. President Joe Biden's precipitous withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan; the growing pressure on Europe to take sides with the United States on China; and France's exclusion from a new security alliance in the Indo-Pacific region.
Many EU member states disagree with Macron. Eastern European countries, some of which face existential threats from Russia, know that neither the EU nor France can match the military capabilities offered by NATO and the United States.

Until they ask for help again.
Please do this, Europe.
Please do this, Europe.
Not so fast-—first pay us for all the free service.
LOL. They want to build an “army” but don’t want to actually pay for it. And they will probably fill its ranks with migrants (like Rome did before it collapsed). Good luck with that.
It’s probably for the best. Just because this is how it has been for generations doesn’t make it the best way right now.
Can they do it on less than the 2% of GDP they were supposed to contribute (but rarely did) to the joint NATO effort?
They have proposed this several times but never accomplished it. Riding on our coattails is easier and cheaper.
Won’t be good for the US military industrial complex.
Until the French decide to be in charge or be offended, the Italians want to have all the building and equipment contractors and money deals, and the Germans end up with all of the work, equipment, forces and don’t want any more of their neighbors.
Yeah, that’s history repeating itself.
Now that’s funny…
Macron’s EU army would likely be the final nail in the coffin of the EU. I can’t imagine much support for the idea outside of France, Germany and maybe the Benelux countries. The Visegrad Four (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia) are more worried about Russia, and with their memories of the old Soviet Union, likely want no part of subservience to a Franco-German army. Ditto the countries in the Balkans. The Irish, Italians and Greeks aren’t into militarism. The Socialists in Spain and Portugal might be up for this, but there’d likely be a backlash from the voters.
Another step towards one world government.
“Can they do it on less than the 2% of GDP they were supposed to contribute (but rarely did) to the joint NATO effort?”
The EU made some sense as an economic union. But even that has failed. The norther economies have devastated the southern economies. Those countries do not have the same political interests. Already they all hate Brussels, which is busy dictating how many sheets of toilet paper can be in a roll and how much it can weigh and what color it can be.
Imagine the problems of building a military and then deciding how you are going to use it when none of the European countries share any common interests.
The EU military would be used in Europe against other members of the EU. It’s for damned sure they won’t use it against Russia. If Italy decides it won’t abide by the EU toilet paper standards they would be invaded and occupied and forced to pay for the occupation as well as have their toilet paper taxed as a punishment for not obeying the standards. Then, they’d install cameras in all the Italian bathrooms to make sure they Italians weren’t using some other toilet paper.
You’re right about the fissures in the EU.
An EU Army wouldn’t help them so long as they fear each other more than the Russians.
But, without Uncle Sam around to carry the weight, maybe they’d “get more real.”
Like you, I doubt it.
The United States of Europe and Emmanuel Macron as President
All that’s missing is for Pope Francis to begin falsely prophetizing. Not kidding
