POPLARVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Six foals sired by a cream-colored stallion called DeSoto scamper across a pasture in southwest Mississippi — the first new blood in a century for a line of horses brought to America by Spanish conquistadors and bred by Choctaw Indians who were later forced out of their ancestral homelands.

Sarah was in the fertilized egg business. She had several hundred young pullets and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs. She kept records and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so she bought some tiny bells and attached them to her roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so she could tell from a distance which rooster was performing. Now, she could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report just by listening to the bells. Sarah's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a fine specimen but...

Ezekiel is a key figure in the Bible and in his end-of-days prophecy, he foresees the Dead Sea flourishing into life – something that is considered to be impossible due to its high salt content. Israeli photojournalist Noam Bedein has reported sightings of marine life in small sinkholes around the Dead Sea, as well as vegetation growing. Photos released by the Dead Sea Revival Project show tiny fish swimming in water that is reportedly from the highly-salinated body of water. Mr Bedein, who works on the Dead Sea Revival Project, which works to preserve the Sea and other Israeli “water...

This is not fake news. A team of UCF astrophysicists has developed a scientifically based, standardized method for creating Martian and asteroid soil known as simulants. For example, scientists looking for ways to grow food on Mars—cue the Martian movie—need to test their techniques on soil that most closely resembles the stuff on Mars.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- A North Carolina city dealing with fallout from Hurricane Florence has been swarmed by aggressive mosquitoes nearly three times larger than regular mosquitoes. One resident, Robert Phillips, describes their rise as "a bad science fiction movie." North Carolina State University entomology professor Michael Reiskind told The Fayetteville Observer that Florence's floodwater has caused eggs for mosquito species such as the Psorophora ciliata to hatch. These mosquitoes, often called "gallinippers," are known for their painful bite and often lay eggs in low-lying damp areas. The eggs lie dormant in dry weather and hatch as adults following heavy rains....

A Hong Kong man has developed the world's first ever human case of the rat version of the hepatitis E virus, according to new research from one of the city's leading universities. There had previously been no evidence the disease could jump from rats to humans, the University of Hong Kong said Friday, warning the discovery had "major public health significance". "This study conclusively proves for the first time in the world that rat HEV can infect humans to cause clinical infection," the university added. Rat hepatitis E virus is very distantly related to human hepatitis E virus variants, HKU...

More than five million riders crowd into New York City’s subway on an average workday, and officials say some of them are making everybody late. At the 34th Street-Penn Station stop, Frank Gallagher thrust his foot between the closing doors of an uptown 2 train on a recent morning and wedged his way inside. “I made up my mind I was going to catch that train,” said the 57-year-old entertainment industry union rep. “I’m five minutes late as it is.” But nothing enrages commuters more than train delays. Except, maybe, blaming commuters for train delays.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine (AP) — These lobsters are going to pot in more ways than one. A Maine lobster pound is banking on using marijuana to try to make cooking the crustaceans a little more humane. The business, Charlotte's Legendary Lobster Pound in Southwest Harbor, is owned by a registered medical marijuana caregiver.

There’s a bumper crop of squirrels in New England, and the frenetic critters are frustrating farmers by chomping their way through apple orchards, pumpkin patches and corn fields. The varmints are fattening themselves for winter while destroying the crops with bite marks. Robert Randall, who has a 60-acre orchard in Standish, Maine, said he’s never seen anything like it. “They’re eating the pumpkins. They’re eating the apples. They’re raising some hell this year. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen,” he said. Evidence of the squirrel population explosion is plain to see along New England’s highways, where the critters are becoming...

Goats recognise and are attracted to happy humans, a study has found. Much like us, they seem to be drawn to smiling faces. But don’t expect to make friends with a goat if you scowl at it. Scientists showed 20 goats unfamiliar photos of the same human face looking happy or angry. ================================================================= The research, conducted at Buttercups Sanctuary for Goats in Kent, demonstrated that the goats preferred to interact with the smiling face. Released from a distance of four metres (13ft) they generally made straight for the happy image, exploring it curiously with their snouts. This suggested that goats...

okay, day before primary. we have four ag commish candidates running on the R ballot. Matt Caldwell. NRA endorsed, looks like the most money but I heard he was ANTI TRUMP like Putnam was...then changed his tune when Trump won. Denise Grimsely. Reminds me of Sarah Palin. She might even be trying to imitate her. Has a B rating from NRA, but has also run her own business. I respect that. Mike McCallister. Retired army man. Running, it appears on a shoestring budget--which means if he is the nominee the Dems might be able to outspend him. He appears to...

We don’t yet know how the long-horned tick came to the United States, how it’s spreading, or what it’s capable of doing. All we know is that it’s here. There’s a new tick crawling around the Eastern half of the United States: the long-horned tick, an invasive species from Eastern Asia that’s been spotted increasingly in urban areas like Staten Island in New York, along with New Jersey, Virginia, and all the way down to Arkansas. This new tick, however, is a mystery. Its cousins, most notably the black-legged tick, currently inhabit most of the eastern half of the United...
