Measuring over 5ft (1.6m), it was found almost completely intact, submerged in a freshwater pool near the ruined Mayan city of Chichen Itza. The rare find came during construction work on a new tourist railway known as the Maya Train. In a statement, the Inah said archaeologists had also discovered ceramics, a ritual knife and painted murals of hands on a rockface in the pool, known as a cenote. Experts from Paris's Sorbonne University have been helping with pin-pointing the canoe's exact age and type, the statement said. A 3D model of it would also be made to allow replicas...

“Mushrooms are here to help us—they’re a gift,” Ayers told NBC. “There’s so much we can do with them beyond just food; it’s so limitless. They’re our biggest ally for helping the environment.” The canoe is made of mycelium—the dense, fibrous, underground material that links together the various fruiting parts (the toadstools we see on the ground or our dinner plates).

According to Misao Dean, Professor of English at the University of Victoria, the canoe can be a symbol of colonialism, imperialism and genocide due to history. She also accused the canoers of cultural appropriation because they are primarily white men and have a privileged place in society. In a radio interview for CBC Radio, which wasn’t picked by the Internet until several months later, she claimed “we have a whole set of narratives that make the canoe into a kind of morally untouchable symbol, something that seems natural, that seems ordinary, and seems to promote values that we ascribe to.”

A former Afghanistan Marine who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder has found refuge in rowing the length of the Mississippi river. The trip to the mouth of the river at the Gulf of Mexico took Joshua Ploetz, 69 days, about 50 of them spent paddling. But Ploetz said he needed every inch of the more than 2,500-mile river to paddle away the demons of the war, or at least calm them a bit. Ploetz, 30, from Winona, Minnesota, returned from the war eight years ago after being injured by a roadside bomb, suffering a minor stroke and watching his friends...

LONDON, July 21 (Reuters) - Olympic organisers are "very alive" to the threat of a cyber attack on the London 2012 Olympics, made more challenging because of its evolving nature, senior Interior Ministry officials said on Tuesday. Ticketing systems, the transport network and hotel bookings as well as security are among potential targets. Olympic security officials are also planning for the possible diversion of aircraft to protect airspace around the venues from terrorist attacks, the officials said. The greatest threat to security at the Games is international terrorism, the government's latest "Safety and Security Strategy" report said.

A canoe with four occupants went over a diversion dam and broke apart on a South Dakota river, killing three people and leaving an 8-year-old survivor to walk barefoot about two hours for help, authorities said. The canoe was "sucked into the turbulent waters below" the dam on the Belle Fourche River Sunday afternoon, according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office in western South Dakota. Killed were Jeramy Rogers, 38; his daughter Sierra Rogers, 11; and his U.S. Forest Service (USFS) coworker and friend Andrew Korth, 26. All lived on the same block in Rapid City, S.D. Isabella Rogers, another...

A canoe used for fishing and river travel, the waka tikai was discovered at the southern end of the beach. It took a couple of days to plan its excavation so that the seven-metre waka would not be damaged. Finding the whole length of a waka is fairly rare, as usually only sections are found, such as the prow or stern. Auckland Regional Council parks staff and locals carefully moved the waka on to a truck, which took it to a temporary home at the regional council depot. “It’s difficult to date the waka because it may have been created...

A grieving father told yesterday how he was forced to make a 'life and death' decision over which of his children to save when a family canoe trip turned to tragedy. TV presenter Ian Clayton's daughter Billie, nine, died after their canoe capsized, throwing them into fast-flowing water, along with Billie's twin brother Edward. Yesterday Mr Clayton, 48, spoke through tears as he told how he had been told by his son to save Billie first. He desperately tried to lift the canoe clear but couldn't see Billie and was only able to grab Edward. Buoyed by their lifejackets, Mr...

'Today' continued this morning its campaign of promoting the Baker-Hamilton recommendations. Chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell left little doubt as to her inclinations with this mini-editorial in the guise of a report:"Americans might well be asking today after all the high-profile summits this week on two continents 'is the administration any closer now to an exit strategy for Iraq?'"Noting that "time is running out and options limited," Mitchell wanted to know whether President Bush is "ready to change policy before events overtake him?" She then launched into a description of the policy changes to be proposed by the Baker-Hamilton...

Ancient Canoe Found by Wichita State University Professor on Belize Research Dig WICHITA, Kan., Oct. 10 (AScribe Newswire) -- An ancient canoe -- more than likely the oldest canoe ever uncovered in Mesoamerica -- was discovered this summer in a cliff-top cave in Belize by an excavation team being led by Wichita State University archaeologist Keith Prufer. Prufer estimates that the canoe very likely dates to 200 to 800 AD, based on previous findings in the area. Carbon testing is currently being wrapped up to confirm that the canoe is indeed the oldest found in Mesoamerica, the geographical region from...

Archaeologists working on a gas pipeline near Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire have unearthed what they believe to be a 3,400-year-old canoe. Work has stopped on a section of the pipeline near St Botolphs to allow the Bronze Age oak relic to be recovered. It is the first such discovery in Wales and only 150 exist across Europe. Senior archaeologist Neil Fairburn said: "You could never have expected to find anything like this in this small wetland area, it's just awesome." The team has also found evidence of a small settlement, a small amount of property and other items, such as...

Spray, delay, and walk away." "Grooming Guru" Kyan Douglas can be overheard dishing this advice to the (formerly) clueless men on TV's makeover show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." He knows a little cologne goes a long way. Mike Church wishes his directions were more widely heeded. "People my age, they'll drench it on," the 19-year-old Express Men employee says recently during his shift at Mishawaka's University Park Mall. "It'll just give you a headache." Church doesn't let the poor choices of his peers prevent him from doing it right. He and all three of his brothers, ages 14,...

On Oct. 14, Michelle Kosinski, an intrepid new NBC News correspondent who made her name this summer chasing Natalee Holloway’s ghost through Aruba, found herself up a creek without a paddle in the middle of the Today show. Only, she had a paddle. What she didn’t have was a creek. In what would have been a beautifully choreographed segment, Ms. Kosinski was reporting live about flooding in Wayne, N.J., in a canoe that was floating down a submerged suburban thoroughfare. “Eight days of rain, and some neighborhoods don’t even look like neighborhoods anymore,” she told Today viewers at the top...

Aussies find bronze age canoe January 14, 2005 AUSTRALIAN archaeologists have unearthed one of the oldest log canoes ever found in South-East Asia. A team from the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra and conservators from the National Museum of Australia excavated a 2.5m section of the boat last month at Dong Xa, about 50 kilometres southeast of the capital Hanoi. The boat was used for burial and contained the body of an adult. It would have been about 10m long and was believed to have been used in the Red River delta area around 100BC by a people known...
