There was a (very) brief period in which BofA’s Michael Hartnett – whom we long ago dubbed Wall Street’s biggest bear – turned ever slightly more bullish, when he told clients that while the bear market is far from over (recall he expects that to end some time in October with the S&P plunging down to 3,000) a powerful bear market rally had taken hold around the time we saw the biggest equity inflow in 10 weeks; even so, his advice to clients was simple: “fade all rallies.” All that’s over, and in his latest Flow Show note (available to...

Sweeping new federal recommendations announced on Monday for Americans to sharply limit their activities appeared to draw on a dire scientific report warning that, without action by the government and individuals to slow the spread of coronavirus and suppress new cases, 2.2 million people in the United States could die. To curb the epidemic, there would need to be drastic restrictions on work, school and social gatherings for periods of time until a vaccine was available, which could take 18 months, according to the report, compiled by British researchers. They cautioned that such steps carried enormous costs that could also...

For the third week in a row, President Trump is spending the weekend in Florida at Mar-a-Lago. It seems Trump enjoys spending time at the club he owns in Palm Beach, but since the election, his stays there have raised issues not seen when he was a private citizen. They involve security and the impact his visits are having on people and businesses in Palm Beach. At Palm Beach County Park Airport in Lantana, just six miles from Mar-a-Lago, the situation is dire.

The deliberations of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 were held in strict secrecy. Consequently, anxious citizens gathered outside Independence Hall when the proceedings ended in order to learn what had been produced behind closed doors. The answer was provided immediately. A Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?†With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, “A republic, if you can keep it.†I actually can’t believe I’m writing this, but the following speech from freshman U.S. Senator Ben Sasse (R, Neb) is so thoughtful and inspiring, it should be required...

Jim Rawls is with Peter Schiff today. He maintains a survivalist blog and is the author of several science fiction survival books. He is concerned about the possibility of an economic collapse and the hyperinflation that may be right around the corner. Interest in survival and family preparedness is up by about 30% in the past year. Right now, people seem to be more concerned about man-made disasters rather than natural disasters. You can see this in Egypt right now. The primary catalyst for all the riots over there is because the price of food has increased so substantially. Coffee...

The 1980s song Money for Nothing by the British rock band Dire Straits has been deemed unacceptable for play on Canadian radio. In a ruling released Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council says the song contravenes the human rights clauses of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code. A listener to radio station CHOZ-FM in St. John's complained last year that the song includes the word “faggot” in its lyrics and is discriminatory to gays. The broadcaster argued that the song had been played countless times since its release decades ago and has won music...

MIAMI (Reuters) – UBS AG (UBSN.VX) (UBS.N) warned Friday that it could go out of business if it complied with an order to reveal the names of thousands of suspected U.S. tax dodgers with secret offshore accounts at the Swiss bank. In papers filed in federal court in Miami, attorneys for UBS said a U.S. government lawsuit filed Thursday could force it to violate Swiss criminal law by turning over information protected by Swiss financial privacy laws. Such a violation would expose UBS employees to "substantial prison terms" as well as fines, penalties and other sanctions," the lawyers said. They...

Climate scientists issue dire warning David Adam, environment correspondent Tuesday February 28, 2006 The Guardian (UK) The Earth's temperature could rise under the impact of global warming to levels far higher than previously predicted, according to the United Nations' team of climate experts. A draft of the next influential Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report will tell politicians that scientists are now unable to place a reliable upper limit on how quickly the atmosphere will warm as carbon dioxide levels increase. The report draws together research over the past five years and will be presented to national governments in...

If humans don't curb use of fossil fuels, the planet will warm 14.5 degrees Fahrenheit by the year 2300. The polar ice caps will disappear and oceans will rise 23 feet (7 meters). That's the conclusion of climate simulations released today by scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. At the poles, the average temperature would rise more than 36 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius), the model predicts. "The temperature estimate is actually conservative because the model didn't take into consideration changing land use such as deforestation and build out of cities into outlying wilderness areas," said Govindasamy Bala of...

NEW YORK: Israel should be ready to face dire consequences if it intends to target Iran’s nuclear installations, President Pervez Musharraf said in an interview with an Arabic language daily on Saturday, according to a private TV channel. President Musharraf said that Israel was “neither the policeman of the world” nor did it have “any right to attack Iran”. “Israel is committing a breach of the world order. It should get ready to face horrendous eventualities if it attacks Iran,” he added. He went on to say that Israel’s military offensive against Iran would have negative regional and international implications....
