My memories of this song are from the tape I had of it and other "Drive Fast" songs back in that time. I remember listening to it driving in the very early morning to go to the 12 Hours of Sebring sports car race in Florida. Deserted back roads in a 911 turbo going way over the speed limit for many years and never pulled over. I don't even remember my top speed, but would not want to post it.

105.9 FM is the local classic rock station in south Florida.....just a few minutes ago, I was bored with everything else on the radio and hit that station...just in time to hear the beginning of the hit "Money for Nothing"... Imagine my surprise when the lyric got to: "That little faggot with the earring and the mink coat, Yeah, buddy, thats his own hair. That little faggot got his own jet airplane. That little faggot is a millionaire!" Funny lines....but the dreaded "slur" was clipped out! Absurd. Anyway, since I RARELY listen to music radio, I was wondering if this...

CANADA'S broadcast standards council has amended an earlier ruling that deemed Dire Straits' hit Money for Nothing unfit for radio, saying that while the homophobic slur in the song is inappropriate, it must be taken in context. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission had asked for a review of the song after the standards council ruled in January that the British band's song was unfit for radio because its lyrics include a gay slur. The council had responded to a complaint from a radio listener.

The 1980s song Money for Nothing by the British rock band Dire Straits has been deemed unacceptable for play on Canadian radio. In a ruling released Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council says the song contravenes the human rights clauses of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code. A listener to radio station CHOZ-FM in St. John's complained last year that the song includes the word “faggot” in its lyrics and is discriminatory to gays.

By now most everyone has learned of the ridiculous decision made by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council to ban airplay of an unedited version of Dire Strait's Money for Nothing, deeming it offensive due to the use of the word 'faggot'. The buzz has even gone international. K97 in Edmonton, Alberta has decided to protest this idiocy, announcing their plan to play the full version of the tune 'unedited and non-stop' for a full hour, beginning at 8:00pm (Mountain) Friday night. From their website: K-97 is well aware of the dangers of censorship and the effect it has on Canadian’s...

It may be a classic rock song but 26 years after it was first released Dire Straits hit Money For Nothing has been banned from radio. The song was ruled too offensive for the airwaves in Canada because it contains the word 'f****t' and can now no longer be played in its original form. Any station that wants to play the song will have to edit it or disguise the word, according to ruling by the Canadian Broadcasts Standards Council. The decision came after a listener complained that the broadcast of unedited version of the song – which mentions the...

The Nazi's at the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council have determined, after a complaint filed last February by a listener of OZ fm in Newfoundland, that the song 'Money for Nothing' by British rockers Dire Straits was 'too offensive for radio'. In the song, a working class average Joe wishes he'd have learned to 'play a guitar' so he would have made 'money for nothing' and got his 'chicks for free'. The segment of the song that the CBSC decided was offensive contains the lines: "...that little faggot with the earring and the make up...", "...that little faggot got his own...

Dire Straits - Skateaway 1980 RIP Jayzik Azikiwe(Rollergirl). Watching the pre-MTV "Skateaway" video I was wondering who the young lady roller-skater was. Looking it up she is credited as Jay Carly, but real name Jayzik Azikiwe. She died early this year with little or no notice by the press. Certainly none I saw. Looking at her obit she left London years ago to return to Africa. Daughter of an early president of Nigeria, she spent her life as a successful artist and musician in Africa. Just thought there might be a few interested in what became of the lady with...

Dire Straits legend Knopfler says accident shaped his music Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler said Friday that a motorcycle accident two years ago had shaped his music and made him cherish the present. Knopfler broke his collarbone and six ribs in a near-fatal accident in 2003 when his motorbike collided with a car in central London. His 2004 hit "Shangri-La" has references to the accident. "Everybody has their own ideas of Shangri-La ... I tried to teach myself to enjoy the present, enjoy the now," Knopfler, the songwriter and Dire Straits lead guitarist, told a news conference the night before...
